Matt Reeves, the writer and director behind the new DC Comics movie, The Batman, has given fans their first glimpse of star Robert Pattinson wearing the iconic Batman suit.

The newly-released footage shows Pattinson walking into frame, saturated in a brooding red light, and set to an eery score by composer Michael Giacchino. His sleek suit comes into focus as the camera pans up, emphasizing the caped crusader's familiar face mask.

In an interview with Variety last September, Pattinson spoke about his desire to land the role.

“I’d had Batman in my mind for a while,” Pattinson said at the time. “It’s such an absurd thing to say. I sort of had an idea to do it, and I’d been prodding Matt. He didn’t accept any prods. I kept asking to meet him.”

Pattinson, who also stars in Christopher Nolan's new film, Tenet, relished the idea of playing DC's biggest superhero, even considering himself a huge fan of Tim Burton's 1989 and 1992 iterations of the classic chracter.

“When I was a kid, it was the only outfit that I had,” Pattinson said of the Batman suit, although he stopped short of saying where he used to wear it. “If I actually said it in an interview, I would definitely have a lot of abuse afterwards. If I successfully play the character, I can say it at the end.”

Reeves, who was previously seen directing the last two Planet of the Apes films, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes, has been secretive of the role since landing the part.

Originally, Ben Affleck had been tapped by DC Comics and Warner Bros. to write, direct, and star in his own Batman film, which had gone so far as to cast its villain, Joe Manganiello.

After some creative differences, a flailing franchise, and some personal turmoil derailed Affleck's iteration, Warner Bros. began looking in another direction.

Rumors swirled for months about who would play the titular hero after Reeves was hired to helm the project, but ultimately, he found his star in the well-known Twilight actor.

Cast alongside Pattinson is also Zoe Kravitz, who will play Catwoman, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.

Kravitz recently spoke with Variety about what it's been like working alongside Pattinson in the much-anticipated blockbuster.

"I’ve never worked with him before, but we’ve been together for the last few weeks, I had to camera test with him and now we’ve been training together and rehearsing together and he’s just a delightful person and such a wonderful, thoughtful actor,” Kravitz said. “It’s going to be a long shoot and there’s a lot of pressure, and I know he has my back and I have his.”

The Batman is set to come out on July 25, 2021.
