There used to be a time when biceps and chests were basically the only walking billboards for tat art. A dagger through the heart. A bouquet of flowers, a cross, a heart on the ankle or words like “Mother” scribbled on the forearm were a common sight to see. Today, celebrities are inking their faces like nobody’s business.

Will it get so bad until we’ll need dental records to identify the names behind the faces? Remember how our eyes bulged out of our heads when boxer Mike Tyson got a tribal tattoo on the left side of his head in 2003? Is no face safe?

By way of cursive font to the forehead, Amber Rose is paying tribute and reminding everyone of the names of her two boys, “Bash” and “Slash.” Alexander “AE” Edwards, boyfriend and father of her youngest son Slash Electric Alexander followed suit by getting the boys’ birthdates stamped on his forehead. It remains to be seen if Wiz Khalifa, the father of Amber Rose’s oldest son Sebastian, will do the same. 21 Savage has a knife on his forehead.

Former Nickelodeon star Amanda Bynes took her heart and placed it on her cheek. Well, not exactly. She debuted the face art right before the new year

When Mere Words Won't Do

There used to be a saying that one wears one's heart or feelings on their sleeve. Well, those days are over. You can now wear them on your face.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford's super model son Presley Gerber's emotions are written all over his face. He has the word "misunderstood" tattooed on his right cheek. "It says misunderstood, because that's how I felt my entire life," Presley explained to his followers.

Aaron Carter has the word "Love" on the underside of his right eye and what appears to be an inspired piece from a 2013 Rihanna cover shoot slapped on the left side his face.

Tattoo artist Bang Bang created a Bible-inspired ink for Justin Bieber who has the barely visible word “grace” scripted above his eyebrow.

Chris Brown debuted new ink at the 2020 Grammys, an Air Jordan 3 sneaker on the side of his face, which joined the other tapestry already present.

And there are the not so subtle statements. The in-your-face with my face is a canvas artwork. Texas rapper Post Malone and Lil Wayne seem to keep adding on to their body real estate. Post Malone just took a buzz saw to his face. Not literally. Just a tattoo of one.

After Mike Tyson shocked the world (hard to imagine, right?) by covering up half his face with a tattoo, feverish head-scratching immediately began. Why?

According to the 2008 documentary Tyson, the boxing champ stated that the tattoo represented his 'warrior status.’ It is similar to the ones that members of the Māori tribe, a warrior-like tribe in New Zealand, wore to scare people in battle. Mike Tyson also got the tattoo because he thought the design was 'cool'.

He said, "I thought it was so hot. I just thought it was a cool tattoo."

After getting it done, millions have gone on to get the same. Tyson once said, "I love this tattoo. Over a million people got it now, so I did a good thing. This is good."
