Being a transgendered person is already hard enough, but growing up in the spotlight of famous parents can make transitioning even harder. Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union are only one recent example of celebrity parents accepting their transgender children.

Parents in the public eye who accept their children's chosen identity are setting positive examples to transphobic ones watching. It's a beautiful transition, but trans youth are also more prone to domestic violence and hate crimes. No child should be abandoned, and we applaud these parents for doing the right thing.

Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union publicly supported their young daughter Zaya as she changes her pronouns and transitions to a woman. Wade went on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" and detailed how Zaya came home after school to discuss her feelings and needs.

Wade and Union then went searching for as much information as they could to be true allies to Zaya and the LGBTQ+ community. Union, Zaya's stepmother has also been incredibly supportive, taking her to Pride parades and events.

Hollywood royalty, Warren Beatty and Annette Benning fully support their transgender son Stephen Ira, who started transitioning at fourteen years old. In 2016, Beatty discussed his career and the pride he has for his activist son, telling Vanity Fair that, "He's a revolutionary, a genius, and my hero, as are all my children."

Benning also praised their son in 2017, saying that she'll let him speak for his life and choices, although sometimes she wishes she could for all her children.

Cher supported her son Chaz Bono's transition to a man from the get-go in 2008 when transphobia reigned in media outlets and tabloids. Moreover, she described it as a strange time for her as a mother, afraid that her child would be unrecognizable.

Now, Cher is an LGBTQ+ ally, praised in the community for her support and talent. More heartwarming still, she says she and Bono have a closer relationship and have more fun now than they've had in a while.

Cynthia Nixon

Cynthia Nixon, a "Sex And The City" star is herself an LGBTQ+ identifying woman, currently married to Christine Marinoni. Her child Seph, full name Samuel Joseph Mozes, is from her first marriage, and she announced her support for him in 2018 for #TransDayOfAction.

Although Nixon identifies as queer, there is still transphobia within the LGBTQ+ community, and her supporting her trans son is a big step towards progress. However, Nixon was glad that the media did not really respond negatively, showing the progress that has been made.
