The Not So Simple Life of Paris Hilton

Before there were the Kardashians, cameras used to follow the Hilton sisters, Paris and Nicky like a shadow. There was nothing "simple" about the lives of the great-granddaughters of hotelier Conrad Hilton. Perhaps that's why the producers at Fox thought it would be a good idea to create a reality series starring the young heiresses. There was one problem. While Paris Hilton was onboard with the idea, her more limelight shy sister Nicky was not.

Allegedly, Paris asked friends Kimberly Stewart and Band-Aid heiress Casey Johnson to join her. Johnson declined and Paris "ended up" sealing the deal with Nicole Richie.

The producers found a family living in Altus, Arkansas who agreed to be a part of the show, allowing Paris and Nicole to live with them as Paris constantly used the catchphrase "That's Hot." 'The Simple Life' depicted two rich and privileged socialites (Paris and Nicole) struggling to perform low-paying jobs like farm work and cleaning rooms. ‘Green Acres’ with a twist. And from 2003 to 2007 people turned on their televisions to "keep up with Paris and Nicole."

Even though the show's premise was to display the girls as fish out of water, Paris Hilton has admitted to being "in on the joke." She said, "Sometimes it is annoying people assuming I am the blonde airhead that I played on the show, but I like proving people wrong."

Currently, the 38-year-old is showing quite the business acumen with a billion dollar fragrance empire, over 50 Paris Hilton stores globally and a product line to include everything from skin care to footwear to handbags. She has a YouTube original documentary called This Is Paris dropping in May.

Regarding the documentary, Paris Hilton says that she discusses things that she's never spoken about before and hopes people see who she truly is. According to Paris, this time having cameras follow her around freaks her out because now the lens captured her life whereas in the past, she was playing a character. Paris Hilton ended her 3rd wedding engagement in 2018.

Paris Hilton's mom Kathy expressed her feelings about 'The Simple Life' reality series to during the Fourth Annual Entertainment Studios Oscar Gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel recently. Kathy Hilton said in the beginning she was against the idea of her daughter playing a rich ditz on 'The Simple Life.' Now, she thinks it was cute and entertaining.

The 60-year-old mother of four says she still likes to revisit several IG accounts devoted to moments in the show, reflecting on the early 2000's. To her it's like a time capsule of fashion.

Reports surfaced in 2005 that Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton were no longer friends. In fact, Paris even admitted as much. Reportedly, they did reconcile in October 2006. However, neither of them has ever spoken about what caused the split. The only comment Paris made on the matter was that "Nicole knows what she did and that's all I'm ever going to say about it."

Now a mother of two, Nicole Richie married singer Joel Madden of the rock group Good Charlotte in December 2010.
