It was way back in 2003, when Eminem did not show up to The Oscars in order to accept his award for his hit song 'Lose Yourself,' which was featured in his filed "8 Mile." It was a movie that was inspired by his own life. Performing at local rap battles, the character Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith Jr. wanted to leave the trailer park that he shared with his alcoholic mother, who was played by Kim Basinger. Turns out that year, the song was up for an award at The Oscars. But Eminem was nowhere to be found.

In a recent interview with Variety, Eminem explains that he did not even watch the show to begin with. "Lose Yourself" became the very first hip-hop song to win an Oscar. He reveals that he was actually asleep when a phone call came telling him that he had actually won the Oscar for best song. Eminem said, "I don’t even think I understood back then that you could get an Oscar for a song." He also admitted that he didn't think a show like the Oscars would understand him.

According to the Variety article, Eminem does admit that an offer for him to perform 'Lose Yourself' at the Oscars that year was made. However, he says that the discussions for such did not get very far. After everything was said and done, 'Lose Yourself' co-producer Luis Resto accepted the award on Eminem's behalf. Mathers says that he was more in shock than anything that he had actually became an Oscar winner. He said, "I don’t know that I was disappointed. I was blown back by the fact that I won."

Eminem was flabbergasted that even though he had not shown up to the awards, but had still won, it just blew him away. On the topic, he said, "That to me shows how authentic and real that award is — when you don’t show up and you still win. That makes it very real to me." 'Lose Yourself' has become a beloved hit of the rapper's career, standing the test of time. So, when Lin Manuel-Miranda suggested songs for a movie montage? 'Lose Yourself' seemed like a natural fit.

It 'Felt Right'

The rapper had said that a clip of the movie was already part of a montage. Plus, the fact that Eminem had recently released a new album, the timing had just felt right. He said, "I kinda figured maybe, since I didn’t get a chance to do it at the time, maybe it would be cool. Back then, I never even thought that I had a chance to win, and we had just performed “Lose Yourself” on the Grammys with The Roots a couple of weeks before the Oscars, so we didn’t think it was a good idea."

After approximately 17 years that he had to mull it over, Mathers was pretty open to the idea of performing 'Lose Yourself' at The Oscars. He and his team had flown in a week before the awards show in order to rehearse for the surprise performance. However, most of the rehearsals had to take place somewhere else in order to maintain secrecy. All in all, though, it's good. Eminem is very grateful that he got to take the stage and sing his hit.
