While the TV personality looked stunning in a black, floor-length gown with a thigh slit that displayed her tattoo on her leg, Chyna’s name quickly started trending on Twitter, with thousands of people trying to figure out who invited her to the event.
The question seemed reasonable given that the Oscars is commonly looked at as a prestigious awards ceremony celebrating the work of filmmakers and actors from all around the world. In short, Chyna didn’t really have any reason to be there.
After the 31-year-old had flaunted her curvaceous figure on the red carpet, viewers were quick to share their thoughts on social media. But the response was far from what she expected.
“Uh, so who invited Rob’s ex-girlfriend Blac Chyna to the Oscars because I don’t actually remember her being in any movies this year or am I wrong?” one confused viewer wrote on Twitter.
Another continued: “I literally can’t believe Blac is at the Oscars. This wasn’t what people were talking about when they said they wanted diversity at the damn award show.”
On the day of the event, Chyna had told fans that her invite came from a friend named Christopher Trujillo, who also works as a sound engineer. It’s unclear whether he was part of the production for the show, but apparently he was able to get her a ticket and walk the red carpet.
And just one day after she attended the awards ceremony, her team had given a statement claiming that the response over Chyna being at the Oscars was “racist,” adding that her involvement was no different to anyone in the entertainment industry showing up.
Her rep shared: “Whether it be the fact that she is a reality star, a single mother, or the inevitable reminder that she was a former stripper … it does nothing to change the narrative that just maybe the Oscars indeed are so white.”
Chyna was in attendance because she finds inspiration in supporting her Hollywood peers, mentors and friends, who have provided a blueprint for her career, the rep added.
“[It] further highlights the fight that many African Americans in the Entertainment Industry face; yes, even during Black History Month.”
It was further mentioned in the statement that there were plenty of people who were not part of the film industry at the event, but Chyna was singled out – and her skin color was said to have had something to do with it.
According to her rep, this also showed that the Oscars “still has a big problem with people of color.”
Chyna’s night at the Oscars comes just weeks after her ex-fiancé, Rob Kardashian, filed for primary custody of their daughter, Dream.
