Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have been known as warriors of social justice. Union is currently speaking out about the discrimination she suffered from during her time on NBC’s ‘America’s Got Talent.’ Union allegedly accused Simon Cowell’s production team of calling her hairstyles “too black” and allowing a white man impersonating a black woman to audition. Wade has been behind her every step of the way and continues to support his family. Wade went onto ‘The Ellen Show’to discuss how one of his children came out.
He explained to Ellen that his 12-year-old Zion came out as transgender. She now goes by Zaya and uses she/her pronouns.
“We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community,” Dwyane said. “We’re proud allies, as well. We take our roles and responsibility as parents very seriously. So when our child comes home with a question or an issue or anything, it’s our job as parents to listen and give them the best information and feedback that we can.”
“That doesn’t change because sexuality is involved with it. Once Zaya, our 12-year-old, came home — originally Zion, born as a boy — and said, ‘Hey, I want to talk to you guys, I think going forward I’m ready to live my truth. I want to be referenced as she and her. I would love for you guys to call me Zaya,’ Dwyane continued.
“Internally, it’s now our job to go out and get information,” Dwyane fully supportive of Zaya’s wishes.
According to HollywoodLife, Dwyane and Gabrielle even reached out to the cast of ‘Pose’ to be as informative as they can on their daughter’s expeirences.
“We just want to figure out as much information as we can to give our child the best opportunity to be her best self,” Dwyane added. “I looked at her and said, ‘You’re a leader. And this is your opportunity to allow you to be a voice.’ Right now, it’s through us, since she’s 12 years old, but eventually, it will be through her.”
Dwyane and Gabrielle have also attended pride events with Zaya to show their support. Ellen DeGeneres commended him on how supportive he is being as a parent and for “unconditionally loving and unconditionally supporting your child.”
Wade has just as much love for the rest of his children. The first child that he and Union had together is Kaavia who was born via surrogate in 2018. He had Zaya and 18-year-old Zaire with Siohvaughn Funches. He had his third child Xavier with Aja Metoyer.
