Nipsey Hussle Documentary Is Headed To Netflix After Bidding War

A documentary based on late hip-hop artist and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle is {coming to Netflix}( courtesy of Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay.

The documentary will be focused on the late rapper's life, work and activism right up until his untimely death in March of last year.

Since his death, Hussle has received an outpouring of love and respect from his fans and peers, alike. His family has continued to carry on his legacy with the upcoming documentary being the latest step in securing that.

DuVernay is set to direct a feature-length documentary about the late West Coast rapper and Grammy winner Nipsey Hussle for the streaming platform.

The documentary will be a co-production between DuVernay’s ARRAY and Hussle’s Marathon Films. Netflix secured the project after an intense bidding war hosted by talent agency CAA for the When They See Us producer. The relationship between the streamer and the Oscar-nominated director has been a fruitful one as it became home for the 2016 acclaimed documentary 13th.

The bidding war resulted in a high eight-figure return for the Nipsey film after some intense battling between various high-profile contenders.

DuVerney will not only direct the film but produce as well.

The Nipsey film will be DuVernay’s return to the documentary genre since the criminal justice reform documentary premiered four years ago. Her latest documentary comes less than a year after Nipsey’s fatal shooting last March in South Los Angeles. His death resulted in a huge outpour from the City of Angels for the respected artist and activist who was coming into his own, despite already experiencing commercial and critical success.

Nipsey’s estate reached out to The Wrinkle in Time director directly after seeing her work on 13th and the WTSU miniseries.

Having inked a $100 million overall deal with Warner Bros Television Group in late 2018, DuVernayhas other projects in the work with a one-hour drama based Texas oil for TNT with ex-Queen Sugar showrunner Kat Candler, a Rosario Dawson-starring DMZ pilot for HBO Max and her new OWN series Cherish the Day.

The ARRAY head is also working on a big-budget film adaptation of Jack Kirby’s seminal New Gods. Part of the Warner Bros slate, DuVernay is co-writing the New Gods script along with comics writer Tom King.

Hussle secured his second and third Grammy nomination in December for "Racks in the Middle" and the J Khaled collaboration "Higher". He was honored for both songs by winning the Best Rap Performance and Best Rap/Sung Performance, respectively, at the 62nd Grammy Awards.

During the ceremony, the rapper was honored with a tribute introduced by DuVernay herself. The tribute featured DJ Khaled and Hussle's friends Meek Mill and YG along with Kirk Franklin, John Legend and Roddy Ricch.

The tribute also served to honor late basketball legend, Kobe Bryant.
