When news hit that Aretha Franklin passed away in August of 2018, conversations started to happen about making her life into a movie. A few months after her passing, a movie was officially greenlit. The buzz around different actors started to circulate on the internet. Two names continued to show up. The two most popular names that kept being mentioned were Cynthia Erivo and Jennifer Hudson. In December of 2019, a teaser trailer came out starring Jennifer Hudson.

The simple trailer had Hudson singing one of Aretha's most popular songs. Bright lights flashed behind Hudson as she sang "Respect." It seemed like they’d finally decided that Hudson was going to play the legendary Aretha Franklin. Most fans were pleased with this choice because Hudson not only has the voice to play Aretha, but she also has the acting chops. During the 2020 Oscars that just aired a few days ago, a surprising teaser was played during the commercials. National Geographic released the trailer for a popular show on their network called Genius.

This trailer starred Cynthia Erivo as Aretha Franklin. Somehow, fans will get the best of both worlds when it comes to casting this major role. Genius is an anthology series that focuses on a famous brilliant person each season. The first season focused on Einstein while the second season showcased Picasso’s life. This show is a big deal is because they only choose the best of the best for their stories. Aretha was one of the best in music. She’s legendary.

Both of these projects are set to be released in 2020. This is not Jennifer Hudson’s first time having a lead role in a theatrical movie. In 2006, Hudson starred in Dreamgirls. In her first major motion picture, she won an Oscar, an NAACP award and a SAG award just to name a few. If anyone can live up to the fan's expectations, it’s Hudson. It's even rumored that her family approved of this casting choice too.

Cynthia Erivo is no slouch either. Getting her start in the theatre, she hit our screens out of nowhere. She has become what feels like an overnight sensation. She has had a few supporting roles in major movies but in 2019 she starred as Harriet Tubman. This role was so important to a lot of people because Tubman is a huge part of African American history. Both the movie and the television show will be a huge success. When the movie comes out, fans will finally be able to see Franklin’s story told the big screen. The television show will be able to touch on the little details about her life that a movie doesn’t have time for. Overall, I think fans will be able to enjoy them both.
