Although an Academy Award is one of the most respected accolades a film could possibly receive, the actual ceremony tends to not take itself to seriously. Each year film-fans look forward to the inevitable jokes and memes which come from both the comic presentations of awards and from the inadvertent gaffs that tend to accompany any live television broadcast. From self-deprecating jokes to outsized facial expressions and bizarre costumes, here are some of the funniest moments of the 2020 Oscars ceremony.

Oscars 2020 kicked off with a speech by Chris Rock and Steve Martin, which was full of memorable jokes, including a dig at a surprise audience member: Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Rock and Martin opened their presentation by joking about various Oscars controversies such as Kevin Hart's Twitter scandal and the infamous Best Picture envelope mistake of 2017. They then poked fun at the presence of Jeff Bezos, remarking, "Jeff Bezos is here! Great actor..." Rock proceeded to joke about Bezos' immense wealth, saying, "Jeff Bezos is so rich, he got divorced and he’s still the richest man in the world. He saw Marriage Story and thought it was a comedy.”

One of the most memorable performances of the night was Janelle Monae's opening medley which paid tribute to several films from 2019 including A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, Midsommar, and Queen and Slim. Viewers were highly amused when Monae began walking through the audience asking actors to sing along and received a now-viral shake-of-the-head from Brad Pitt. Pitt's reluctance to sing was quickly noted by Twitter-users, who observed, "Brad Pitt shaking his head as Janelle Monáe approached him with the microphone is every kid begging not to be called on by the teacher in class.".

While the Oscars are obviously all about honoring great films, they're not exactly above poking fun at movies. Last night's ceremonies opened with some light-hearted jabs at nominees like The Irishman, with Chris Rock joking about the film's Netflix affiliation by telling Martin Scorsese, "Marty, I gotta tell you, I loved the first season of The Irishman..."

The biggest burn, however, came from Cats stars James Corden and Rebel Wilson, who presented the award for Best Visual Effects dressed as their Cats characters. In reference to the film's poor reputation for bad graphics, they joked, "as cast members of the motion picture Cats, nobody more than us understands the importance of good visual effects."

Perhaps the biggest meme of the night came courtesy of Billie Eilish and her now-viral look of bemused confusion. During their presentation for the award of Best Costume Design, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph began serenading each other with the Chris De Burgh song "Lady In Red", in reference to their matching red dresses. Cameras cut to Eilish looking extremely perplexed and a meme was instantly born. Billboard jokingly applauded Eilish's candid response and stated, "Billie Eilish's Face Won the Oscar for Best Reaction Shot."
