During last night's Academy Awards ceremony, actress Natalie Portman chose to make a statement with her outfit.

The actress looked beautiful in a black and gold dress. However, it's her coat that had everyone talking.

Portman's black coat had the names of female directors embroidered in gold on the lapel.

Portman's fashion choice was to draw attention to the fact that no female directors received Oscar nominations for their work last year.

While Portman's fashion statement was bold, it was met with mixed reactions.

The Oscars are the biggest awards in Hollywood.

Every year, directors anxiously await to see if they and their films will receive a nomination.

While the academy tends to award films that touch on social issues such as racism and gender inequality, in recent years they've come under fire for their lack of diversity with the nominations.

This year the academy faced more criticism when a female director failed to receive an Academy Award nomination.

Directors such as Greta Gerwig, Lulu Wang, and Kasi Lemmons were left off the list of director nominees.

The all-male nominations in the director's category has once again opened the topic of sexism in Hollywood.

Many actresses have spoken out about gender equality in Hollywood. The stars believe that women should receive just as much recognition as men.

Natalie Portman is one celebrity who's been outspoken about sexism in Hollywood.

Back in January 2018 during a Golden Globes broadcast, Portman presented the Best Director award alongside Ron Howard. Portman wasn't shy about mentioning how the director category consisted of all males.

This year when no female director scored an Academy Award nomination, Portman decided to honor the women by wearing their names on her coat.

Natalie's statement is being applauded by her peers, however many feel that the actress is a hypocrite.

While Natalie Portman made a bold statement with her fashion statement, it has come with criticism.

Many agree that it's a shame no female directors received nominations, however they feel that Portman may be hypocritical in her actions.

Many people have pointed out that it's going to take much more than a coat to address the issue of sexism in Hollywood.

Portman has been very vocal about the work of female directors, however many people have pointed out that the actress hardly ever works with a female director.

A majority of Portman's movies are directed by men, and if she wants to help women in Hollywood, she should be choosing to work with more female directors.

Sexism is a big issue in Hollywood and many actresses have been very vocal about the topic.

While the actresses feel they're taking a stand by lashing out, and wearing political statements on their outfits, this isn't enough.

If the actresses want more equality for female directors, the first step is in working with them.

Even though Hollywood is a male-dominated business, there's plenty of talented female directors out there. Yet, it's hard for these ladies to get their films completed when no one will give them a chance.

If more actresses would work with female directors, it would send an important message about gender inequality Hollywood. It'll help prove that females can make it in an industry mostly dominated by men.

It's time they take action and help showcase the work of the talented female directors out there.
