Something that not a single person saw coming. This past Sunday, the Academy Awards saw a surprise performance by the legend himself, Eminem. The Real Silm Shady performs 'Lose Yourself' a song that if people knew about the performance would've seen coming, but somehow this was kept under wraps until the award ceremony itself. The iconic rapper is no stranger to the Oscars and with his surprise performance on a grand stage, we remember the greatness that is an Eminem performance.

Importance of Music

Right before the performance took place. Lin-Manuel Miranda took the stage and highlighted the importance of music in film.

Miranda said, "In a show celebrating the impact of storytelling, we'd be crazy to miss out on highlighting those songs that have been that have been attached to movies that have forever impacted our collective memory."

Miranda continued, "It only takes a few notes of these songs and I'm immediately transported to the visuals of the movies that are etched into my mind."

Then we see a montage of some of the most iconic music in film and it does just like Miranda described. Taking us back to dozens of times we've seen films where the music is perfectly matched with the movie.

We see the montage end with a scene from Eminem's semi-biographical film, 8 Mile that was released back in 2002 when he was at his peak popularity. As the montage ends, we see Eminem 'rise up' from below the stage and we hear the beat of one of his most iconic songs begin. There is no doubt that everyone in that crowd got chills during that moment as the rapper began his performance for his award-winning song, 'Lose Yourself.' It would've been amazing to see the entire song performed, but at a point in time where we have very little Eminem performances, it was fantastic.

Back in 2002 when 8 Mile was released the film was the first of it's kind. No major artist or rapper for that matter had gotten a film of that magnitude released.

In 2003, Eminem was nominated for Best Orginal Song and took home the Academy Award for his song 'Lose Yourself' sharing the Oscar with Jeff Bass and Luis Resto. It only made sense for this to be the song Eminem chose to perform at the ceremony. Could this be the lead to more performances for Eminem?

Following the performance, Eminem tweeted, "Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity... Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. Sorry it took me 18 years to get here."

The tweet had a video attached to it back when Eminem won the Academy Award back in 2003. At the time, Eminem wasn't in attendance at the ceremony stating in interviews after the win that he thought he had no chance of winning. Eminem's performance comes after he dropped a surprise album, Music to Be Murdered By. It seems like the rapper is all about surprise drops that leave people wanting more.
