The impact Kobe Bryant had on lives of those within the basketball community is well documented, but he also is being remembered by his close friends who the public doesn’t know as well.
One story that has surfaced since Bryant’s tragic death in a helicopter accident on January 26th comes from Chris Sacca, a billionaire investor who was a friend and mentor for Bryant.
He wrote a letter to the Los Angeles Times and detailed the time Bryant “attended” a funeral for his son’s goldfish.
“I told Kobe that our kids’ fish had died and that we were going to have a funeral/celebration of life of it,” Sacca wrote. “I told him that we were going to stream it on Periscope, and he asked me what time.”
“Sure enough,” Sacca wrote, “when the time came, Kobe logged in and watched our fish funeral live and sent his sympathies to our kids. As a dad, he knew how important it was to them and that it mattered to them.”
Sacca said the two usually talked after their kids had gone to bed, and Bryant spoke a lot about his family. “The priority for him was always being at home in time to be with them.”
Another of Bryant’s close friends, Alex Rodriguez, echoed Sacca’s comments about how important family was to him.
“I last saw him a few months ago. I will remember what he told me about how much he loved Vanessa and his girls, and that he continued to say no to 99 percent of offers, choosing instead to spend as much time with his family as possible,” Rodriguez wrote in an Instagram post.
“I will remember his greatness. I will remember his guidance. I will remember his friendship. I will remember that he made me a better person.
“His 13-year-old daughter Gianna was following in her Dad’s footsteps. She was kind, smart, caring and going to be a star,” he continued.
“Rest in peace, Kobe. Rest in peace, GiGi. My heart and prayers go out to the Bryant family and the passengers’ families.”
The most emotional remembrance for Bryant has come from his wife, Vanessa, who shared her heartbreaking thoughts in an Instagram post three days after the accident.
“My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time,” Vanessa wrote. “Thank you for all the prayers. We definitely need them. We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.”
