One of the aspects that has made The Crown, such a hit show has been the fact that nothing’s been really taken off the table. The show has covered, shady and controversial topics from The Royal family’s past. Including, alleged infidelities of Prince Philip to The Queen. As well as a very controversial episode surrounding mentally ill ladies with a close relationship to the Royal Family. In this more modern season of The Crown, the show will tackle very recent royal history. Despite the fact that Prince William has publically asked that the issue not be revisited.
The Panorama Interview
Diana’s infamous Panorama interview has made a lot of headlines recently. Particularly after a report by Lord Dyson indicated that in fact unlawful tactics were used to get Princess Diana to agree to the interview. This new ruling has driven the BBC to have to scramble to settle numerous lawsuits from folks that were directly or indirectly affected by the fallout of the interview. The sit down that Diana had with Martin Bashir marked the first time that the Princess of Wales, admitted that Prince Charles had been unfaithful to her, and she had done the same!
Prince William’s Plea
After the recent court ruling that we referenced early, which took place in late May of this year William pleaded with the media to never have the footage from the interview aired again. He would go on to essentially blame Bashir and the people involved in the interview for being the final nail in the coffin of his parents’ marriage. In hindsight potentially kick-starting the events that lead to Diana’s untimely death. William mentioned in his video address,
“It is my view that the deceitful way the interview was obtained substantially influenced what my mother said. The interview was a major contribution to making my parents’ relationship worse and has since hurt countless others.”
Netflix Is Not Going To Back Down
According to sources who spoke to the British paper The Sun, Netflix isn’t about to bow down to Prince William’s wishes. In fact, the Panorama interview is set to be one of the major plot points around the new season of the hit Netflix drama. Sorry for the spoilers, but then again you’ve probably come to expect them any time that we talk about The Crown. In any case, the insiders tell The Sun,
“To the writers, the stormy marriage between Charles and Di led up to her outpouring on Panorama, and the aftermath of that decision defined her final months.”
A Conflict of Interest With Prince Harry
At this point it would seem that the only person who could have the necessary “pull” to stop Netflix from exploring the subject is Prince Harry. After all, he and Meghan Markle signed a mega deal with the streaming service that is reportedly worth over 100 million dollars. Prince Harry, though, has not been as vocal about the drama surrounding the Panorama interview. Although he did release a statement around the time of the aforementioned court ruling. It’s likely that through this Netflix deal what we won’t see on The Crown is naked Vegas Harry, or Harry in a Nazi costume!
