The world has learned a lot about Jessica Simpson since the release of her revealing memoir Open Book this week. As the title implies, Simpson left nothing out of the book, bringing a new level to the term "tell-all."

Most of the revelations have to do with her romantic relationships, especially her marriage to Nick Lachey, and her struggles with the spotlight.

But she also revealed some more vulnerable and difficult information - that she spent years struggling with alcohol and drugs.

Early Childhood Trauma Led to Addiction

Jessica Simpson's brand has always been the sweet, happy, All-American girl. So, it shocked the world to learn that she was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

In her memoir, Simpson touches on how this early trauma impacted her life. She said that she never really dealt with the abuse properly. Simpson shared that she turned to drugs and alcohol to escape the pain of the abuse. Eventually, she developed a devastating addiction to alcohol and pills that nearly ruined her life.

Her Cup Was Always Full

At the height of her addiction, Simpson's life revolved around drinking and using drugs. “I completely didn’t recognize myself,” she said. “I always had a glitter cup. It was always filled to the rim with alcohol."

The pressure of her career and her life in the spotlight also contributed to Simpson's addiction. Her relationship with drugs and alcohol got out of control, but she “didn’t know it was a problem until it was.”

Simpson also reveals that she missed out on a lot of moments with her family because she was under the influence and not truly present.

Like many who struggle with addiction, Simpson wanted to stop drinking and using drugs the way she was. But she found that she kept putting off quitting. Every day I would say it, ‘I’ll stop soon. I’ll cut back,'" she recounted. But each day she found her glitter cup full again.

Eventually, she realized that she was no longer in control of her drinking and drug use. She shared, "I just realized that I had to surrender. It was time. I had to give it up and I was ready.”

So, what happened to make her realize it was time to quit? In Open Book Simpson shares a heartbreaking story about her realization that alcohol and drugs were taking away her life.

On Halloween of 2017, Simpson was already drunk by the time her kids were going to be coming home from school. She was horrified by the idea of her kids seeing her so drunk, and she thought she was too drunk to help her kids with their costumes.

This incident led her to realize that her substance use was a serious issue and that she needed to get sober.

After that horrifying Halloween, Simpson committed to getting and staying sober. She said that giving up drinking was relatively easy. Her anger at the fact that drugs and alcohol allowed her to numb out of her life motivated her to not pick up a drink or a drug.

But the therapy hasn't been easy, Simpson revealed. She had to do a lot of hard work to heal from her trauma.

Today she works with a team of doctors and therapists to keep doing the work of staying sober.

We're glad to hear that Simpson is happy and healthy, living her best life!
