It’s official: Keanu Reeves has put his black coat back on and is currently filming scenes for The Matrix 4, the sequel that we’ve all been waiting for. New photos and videos have turned up on Twitter, showing Reeves on set in San Francisco reprising his titular role of Neo. Word of the fourth movie in The Matrix franchise began circulating in August 2019 and was later confirmed by Warner Bros. There was also no doubt that Reeves would return to one of the many roles that made him a household name. In addition, the studio also confirmed that Moss would return for the sequel. Although details about the plot are slim to none, it’s likely the new movie will pick up where the third movie left off, with humans left with the choice to leave the digital framework of the matrix or not.

The last film in the franchise, The Matrix Revolutions, premiered way back in 2003. At the time, there were no plans to make any more movies. Instead, the moviemakers blessed the creation of a video game set in that universe, The Matrix Online. It seemed a movie sequel, though, would never happen, although the franchise’s stars continued to express a desire to return. In 2017 Warner Bros. briefly considered a reboot. However, the studio announced in 2019 that a new movie with the original cast was officially in the works.

There are only a few details available about The Matrix 4. Obviously, Warner Bros. will keep as tight-lipped about the plot as possible until closer to its premiere. The good news is that we do know when that premiere will be: the film will release on May 21, 2021. What’s more interesting about that date is that The Matrix 4 will come out on the same day as John Wick 4, meaning that Reeves will be competing with himself at the box office. Perhaps this is why fans have dubbed the date “Keanu Reeves Day.“
At the rate Reeves has been going, every day is Keanu Reeves Day. The actor has experienced a renaissance of sorts and is now more popular than ever. The John Wick films continue to be cash cows, but he’s also appeared in everything from Always Be My Maybe to Toy Story 4. He will even be a character in the highly-anticipated video game Cyberpunk 2077 when it releases later this year. Reeves has also reprised his role of Ted in the upcoming sequel _BIll and Ted Face The Music, which releases this summer. Needless to say, it’s a most excellent time to be Keanu Reeves.
