The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil has come out as queer on Twitter. The actress opened up about her sexual orientation after being criticized by the LGBTQ+ community for her being cast as the lead judge on the upcoming HBO Max series Legendary. The series is a competition series for vogueing and ballroom culture. The series will highlight "modern-day ball culture," as well as feature divas who "battle on teams called 'Houses' in fashion and dance challenges including vogueing for the chance to snatch the legendary trophy and win a cash prize."

Ballroom dancing, particularly vogueing, was popular well before Madonna wrote a song about it. It was ingrained in LGBTQ+ culture well before it ever became a cultural phenomenon. As Jamil was originally reported as the show's host, the LGBTQ+ community grew concerned that someone who didn't represent them would be representing a part of their culture. According to Out Magazine, longtime members of the ballroom community questioned her casting, including Trace Lysette, a mother in the ballroom scene for well over ten years.

Jamil, however, quickly took to social media to clear up what she felt was a misunderstanding. She corrected those who had called her an MC for the show, noting that she is only one of the judges. Although Out believes this is something she did in response to the backlash, Jamil reiterated that her role was not what everyone thought it was. However, that did little to placate the show's critics, who insisted that the series should have hired LGBTQ+ hosts and judges.

As the backlash continued, Jamil eventually responded by coming out as queer on Twitter. After noting that "Twitter is brutal," she wrote a short statement about her sexual orientation, feeling it was necessary as to defend her position on Legendary. She also admitted that this was part of the reason of why she never came out before and mentioned that it was "scary as an actor to openly admit your sexuality, especially when you're already a brown female in your thirties."

Unfortunately, some of Jamil's fans questioned the timing of her announcement as queer and remained skeptical. However, the overwhelming majority praised her decision to come out, although many were upset that she might have felt forced to do so. Jamil has already won over many of her would be critics by focusing on body positivity and blasting Hollywood for its unhealthy standards of beauty for women. Even Taylor Swift has shown support for the actress' many statements on body neutrality.
