The former pop star, Jessica Simpson, has been making her rounds on talk shows promoting her very candid memoir, Open Book, which chronicles the ups and downs of her personal life.
In the memoir, Simpson delves into her alcohol and substance addictions that resulted from her being sexually abused as a child, as well as, her tumultuous and rocky relationship with Nick Lachey, which ultimately, led to divorce.
The relationship with Lachey, however, was covered in very specific detail, with the designer even claiming that her ex-husband begged for her to stay with him before she filed for divorce.
The decision to file for divorce from her husband was not an easy one, as it usually isn’t. For Simpson, she needed to get away from the chaos and find herself again.
To do so, she took a trip to Africa in 2005 as part of a mission called Operation Smile. It was the perfect instance for Simpson to gain clarity about the deleterious and problematic relationship she had maintained with Lachey.
At the time, neither of them were speaking to each other. Simpson shares in her memoir, “[We] were not in any case addressing one another.” But when she returned from her trip to Africa, Lachey “quickly attempted to convince [her] not to leave him.”
This would not be Lachey’s last attempt to try and get her to come back to him.

Knowing that she was making the right decision for her own life, she returned to the house the couple owned together to gather some of her most important belongings, as well as, their dog.
Simpson recalls that the sheer sign of seeing her remove her possessions from the home they shared caused Lachey to freak out. “Regardless of his outrage, and perhaps as a result of it, he was set on not releasing me.”
In fact, Lachey became so frantic that he quickly drove to Simpson’s parent’s house to try and convince them to get involved in the situation and help save their marriage. “He took a stab at conversing with my folks, getting them to reevaluate things, however, I requested that they leave,” Simpson shared. “This was my choice”.

Following the debacle with Simpson’s parents, Lachey vowed to make amends to himself and their marriage as a last-ditch effort. It was a little bit too late for Simpson, though. “You didn’t go when we required it,” she recalled telling him. “He didn’t care for me, so I didn’t comprehend what it was he was attempting to spare.”
The pop star claims that Lachey once again begged her not to leave him, but she told him that their love was no longer sufficient to keep them in a relationship. Shortly after, Simpson entered the process to initiate the divorce filing request and obtained the legal documents to do so.

Receiving the hard copies of the divorce papers led Lachey to craft a couple of songs, directed at Simpson including ‘What’s Left of Me’ and ‘I Can’t Hate You Anymore’. The pop star, no doubt, heard them, making her distraught, despite knowing that divorce was the right thing to do.
Simpson did acknowledge that she saw Lachey one more time because she missed him, but that was the last instance they were together. She finally had closure and clarity to move forward in her life. The couple’s divorce was finalized in 2006. Both have since remarried and started their own families.
