Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin decided to give their relationship another chance when they reconciled in May 2018, just weeks after the “Yummy” singer had called it quits with his on-again, off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez.
But Hailey and Justin stunned fans when, just months after going public with their romance, it was rumored that the two had secretly tied the knot in a courthouse wedding on Sept. 13, 2018, which Bieber wouldn’t confirm until November, in a touching Instagram post.
Still, though, it wasn’t until Sept. 2019 when Hailey and Justin held a bigger wedding ceremony in South Carolina, with all of their closest friends and family members present. Kendall Jenner, Jaden Smith, Kylie Jenner, and Justin Skye were some of the celebs who attended their big day, with plenty of photos being uploaded to their respective social media accounts.
But what caused Hailey and Justin to wait a year before holding their big wedding ceremony? The 23-year-old model, who is covering ELLE’s March edition, explained to the publication just how chaotic their lives were after having privately tied the knot at a courthouse.
“When we first got married, we were just figuring out our life together,” she expressed. “I felt like putting a wedding in the middle of all of that would be really hectic and stressful.”
Hailey notes that the “I’ll Show You” pop star became extremely sick, and though he had visited a number of doctors shortly after getting married to the blonde beauty, doctors failed to identify what was making Bieber feel so poorly. Needless to say, she was worried about her husband.
Bieber’s health took a turn for the worse when the married couple learned that Justin was battling Lyme disease along with “a bunch of medical stuff,” Hailey told the magazine. “We didn’t have a diagnosis.”
“And it was hard because everybody from the outside was being super mean and judgmental, saying he looked like he was on drugs, saying how unhealthy he looked when in truth, he was not healthy and we didn’t know why.”
Instead of addressing the issues at hand, both Hailey and Justin remained silent while people continued to judge.
In the midst of already having to deal with trolls who criticized Hailey for “tarnishing” Justin’s relationship with Selena, she was now forced to deal with comments from people saying that her husband looked anything but healthy when making public outings in Los Angeles.
Of course, fans weren’t aware at the time that Justin was dealing with a lot of health problems stemming from his Lyme disease, but it also wasn’t something that Hailey or Justin wanted to shed light on until the timing felt right.
Justin’s health problems have been well-documented in his YouTube series, Justin Bieber: Seasons, which tackles a number of issues the 25-year-old has faced since abruptly canceling the remaining dates of his Purpose Tour in July 2017.
