The Public Affairs songstress, Jessica Simpson, has been making her rounds in promoting her candid memoir titled ‘Open Book‘. In the memoir, the former pop star tells-all including her past substance and alcohol addiction as a result of sexual assault during childhood, the rocky relationship and divorce from Nick Lachey, among other highly-personal topics.
One other relationship that Simpson addresses in her new book is that of the one she had with the singer and songwriter, John Mayer. She explains the complex up and down relationship the two had for years, recently giving a little bit more insight during a teaser with Hoda Kotb of the Today Show.

In an extended interview with Kotb, which is set to air on Tuesday, Simpson delved into the relationship that she had with Mayer, sharing what truly was going on between them during the tumultuous time.
In the beginning of the interview, Simpson shared that they had a very intimate relationship, yet, it was still up and down, leading the couple to rekindle their romance almost nine times.
“We were great at intimacy,” she began. “We were great at loving each other. That was easy, but the relationship was very complex. And it was always on-again, off-again. On-again, off-again. And I went back close to nine times.”

The story of her romance with Mayer wasn’t being shared for the first time, though. The singer recently sat down with People Magazine in anticipation of the release of her book and shared more details regarding her relationship with Mayer.
In the interview, Simpson revealed that the relationship had some sort of mysterious control over her. “He loved me in the way that he could and I loved that love for a very long time,” she said to People. “Too long. And I went back and forth with it for a long time. But it did control me. He’d walk into a room and pick up his guitar and you’d swoon. I didn’t really know the man behind the guitar. And that was my mission.”
Simpson also shared with People Magazine the moment things were finally over between the two. Mayer had been interviewed by Playboy in 2010, in which he referred to Simpson as ‘Sexual Napalm’, something that really bothered her.
For the former pop star, this was embarrassing, especially knowing that her family would most likely be reading it. “He thought that was what I wanted to be called,” Simpson continued. “I was floored and embarrassed that my grandmother was actually gonna read that. A woman and how they are in bed is not something that is ever talked about. It was shocking.”
Unfortunately, the damage was done and the couple called it quits.
Mayer had since issued an apology to her and she admits that she more or less has forgiven him; however, that did not preclude her from adding it to the book. “I know that he’s publicly apologized and I don’t want to take that away from him,” Simpson shared. “I think he knows a lot of this about me already but he doesn’t know the perspective I have as a woman. That was Jess in her 20s.”
With the extended interview set to air on Tuesday, we’re likely to hear more details pertaining to her ‘complex’ relationship with Mayer.
