Jennifer Lopez and Shakira promsied a “heartfelt” tribute to Kobe Bryant as part of their performance at the Super Bowl on Sunday. While the performance earned incredibly positive reviews on social media, there were some fans who felt that the tribute to Bryant was just a little too subtle.
In fact, many who watched the performance said that they didn’t see the tribute at all. Apparently, the tribute was only visible in overhead shots of the stage, which were often very busy visually.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a cross was lit in yellow and purple just as Jennifer Lopez’s daughter was about to take the stage. The colors were meant to be a nod to Kobe’s 20 years playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, but many fans didn’t see the tribute at all.
“SOS did I miss the Kobe Bryant tribute or?” one user asked on Twitter.
“People were waiting for Pitbull, but I was waiting for the Kobe Bryant tribute during the Halftime Show…” another said.
“So Jennifer Lopez and Shakira used that they were doing a tribute to Kobe Bryant as an excuse to get their views up during the halftime show not only that but then they proceeded to do NO Kobe Bryant tribute like they said they would…but are we surprised?” another user wrote in their comment.
Ahead of their performance, the two performers had promised that there would be a “heartfelt tribute” to the Lakers star in their performance, and the cross meant that there was.
Still, many felt that it should have been more of a focus of the performance. JLo and Shakira were not the only people paying tribute to the basketball legend during the game, though. Both teams also lined up on their respective 24-yard lines to honor the number Bryant wore for much of his career.
The deaths of Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna last Sunday was a shock to the sports world, and it’s one that many in that community are still recovering from.
In discussing Kobe’s shocking death, JLo made a statement on loving people while we’ve got them at her pre-show press conference. “We have to love people when they’re here and not wait,” said Lopez. “I think about Vanessa [Bryant] as a mom and losing her best friend and partner and losing her child, you know, how awful that must be for her right now, and I just wanted to send the message and praying God guides her through every moment because she has three more babies to take care of.”
