Demi Lovato shocked and awed the watchers of one of the biggest nights in music with an emotional and raw performance of her new song “Anyone.” Also, the performer is set to show her talents again by singing The National Anthem at the Superbowl this Sunday.
However, those aren’t the only reasons to be proud of the superstar singer. Demi Lovato has come back from a devastating overdose in 2018, and recently, she has opened up about her attraction to women.
Demi Lovato is doing some soul searching when it comes to her attraction.
“I’m very fluid. I think love is love. You can find it in any gender. I like the freedom of being able to flirt with whoever I want,” the singer told InStyle.
The singer also opened up in a Sirius XM interview. “It was actually, like emotional, but really beautiful,” Lovato said about her coming out to her parents. “After everything was done I was like shaking and crying and I just felt overwhelmed.”
Demi Lovato said her parents reacted well. “My dad was like, ‘yeah, obviously’ and I was like, ‘oh, okay dad.’”
Her mom was also supportive. “My mom was the one that I was like super nervous about, but she was just like, ‘I just want you to be happy,’” Lovato said. “That was so beautiful and amazing, and as I said, I’m so grateful.”
Luckily Demi didn’t suffer the fate that many LGBTQ+ kids face when they come out. About 40% of homeless youth are homeless because their parents kicked them out.
Demi also explained that she doesn’t know what the future holds. “I don’t know what my future looks like,” she said in that Sirius XM interview. “I don’t know if I’m going to have kids this year or in 10 years. I don’t know if I’m going to do it with a partner or without.”
Why did it take Lovato to open up about her sexuality more? There is still a huge stigma surrounding being LGBTQ+ and that is hard to escape.
LGBT youth are more likely to be homeless and they are more likely to become homeless at younger ages, according to Child Trends.
Lesley University says that 50% of all LGBTQ+ youth get a negative reaction from their parent when they come out.
Hopefully, Demi opening up more about her sexuality will help decrease the stigma around it. She can be a role model for young listeners and show them that their feelings are ok and show old listeners that being LGBTQ+ isn’t that big of a deal.
