A petition to have the NBA’s official logo changed to show the likeness of Kobe Bryant is picking up steam following the tragic death of the Lakers legend on Sunday.
The current NBA logo features the outline of a basketball player which was modeled after another great Lakers player, Jerry West.
Now nearly two million people have signed the online petition to change the logo from West to Bryant.
“With the untimely and unexpected passing of the great Kobe Bryant please sign this petition in an attempt to immortalize him forever as the new NBA Logo,” the description on the petition reads, along with a prototype of what the new logo could look like.
Snoop Dogg posted the image on Instagram and wrote, “New logo. @nba Let’s do what’s right.”
Justin Bieber did the same and simply added the hashtag, “#changethelogo.”
Usher also got in on the action, writing, “couldn’t be a better time or all around athlete and person for it. #changethelogo.”
West said in a 2017 interview, according to CBS Sports, that he would be all for the league changing the logo someday. “First of all, I wish that had never gotten out, that logo. No I do, really. I’ve said it more than once…If they would want to change it, I wish they would. In many ways, I wish they would.”
Bryant’s fellow basketball great, Michael Jordan, released a statement about the news on Sunday:
“I am in shock over the tragic news of Kobe’s and Gianna’s passing. Words can’t describe the pain I’m feeling. I loved Kobe – he was like a little brother to me. We used to talk often, and I will miss those conversations very much.
“He was a fierce competitor, one of the greats of the game and a creative force. Kobe was also an amazing dad who loved his family deeply – and took great pride in his daughter’s love for the game of basketball. Yvette joins me in sending my deepest condolences to Vanessa, the Lakers organization and basketball fans around the world.”
“There’s no words to express the pain Im going through with this tragedy of loosing my neice Gigi & my brother @kobebryant I love u and u will be missed. My condolences goes out to the Bryant family and the families of the other passengers on board. IM SICK RIGHT NOW”
“Kobe was so much more than an athlete, he was a family man. That was what we had most in common. I would hug his children like they were my own and he would embrace my kids like they were his. His baby girl Gigi was born on the same day as my youngest daughter Me’Arah.”
