On Sunday the Grammys aired and the mood understandably was beyond somber. Although hearty moments came in spurts, most people had their minds elsewhere. The death of Kobe Bryant and his legacy especially with the show being filmed in Los Angeles had everyone’s emotions drifting. The opener of Alicia Keys ever so elegantly describing what the world was feeling over such an immeasurable loss helped to move along the show, as well as the gorgeous medley sung alongside the iconic group “Boys To Men”.
Artists who won big that night were Billie Eilish which was kind of expected, as well as Lizzo and Lil Nas X. Some first time grammy winners included Tyler The Creator who brought his adorable mother on stage who looked more related than he was, and J.Cole winning alongside 21 Savage. Other pop stars who have established their solidified status in this entertainment industry were snubbed ruthlessly. Notably including Ariana Grande. Last year it cannot be argued that Grande took tragedy not only with her album “Sweetener”, but also “ Thank, U Next” and made an iconic array of music that will last forever. Her vocals on all her albums speak for themselves, and her single “7 Rings” captivated radio. For years it seems as if Ariana hasn’t been gifted her rose petals for her talents, and fans were justifiably upset.
When Eillish won for album of the year it was clear she felt some shame alike to when Beyonce lost to Adele for “Album of The Year” not too long ago. In an Adele fashion but not as overtly emotional, Billie said Ariana deserved the grammy. Many people in the comments could tell she did not feel right winning because of her knowing the impact of “Thank, U Next”. In iconic Ariana fashion which eventually became a meme, she waved her hands comically and mouthed out support to Billie. Grande’s genuineness towards her made people fall in love with her all over again. But, it is clear that not everyone was so forgiving of their faves losing.
One cult like fandom that seems to always be riding for their fav, is Lana Del Rey’s. For years since Lana has released her first official album “Born To Die” people have found it to be blasphemous that the Recording Academy has continued to dishonour her genius. Finally with being nominated for “Norman Fu* Rockwell” there was hope she could win big. Unfortunately she was hit by the Eilish takeover like everyone else and of course her stan’s weren’t too happy with it. Honestly, the Grammys like other “prestigious “ award shows are losing their grip on the public. The lack of excitement throughout the show and the decreasing amounts of actually interesting celebrities who take the time to show up is destroying it. If they keep this up, the new norm might be this generation just skimming through the highlights on Instagram.
