Fans were on the edge of their seat when they learned that Camila Cabello would be dedicating her song and performance at the 2020 Grammys to someone special. Many believed that “special someone” was going to be her boyfriend Shawn Mendes. Instead, the song went to her father Alejandro Cabello.
Here are five things to know about this star’s dad so you can better know why Camila decided that he was worthy of a song dedication at the biggest night in music.
1.) He’s a United States immigrant. Alejandro Cabello is Mexican. When she was five years old, Camila and her mom left Mexico to make a better life for themselves. Her mother had to use a fake address so that Camila could go to school. Alejandro wouldn’t join them until a year later. He would then swim the Rio Grande to join his family.
2.) He got his green card in 2016. Since he wasn’t a citizen he had to seek out citizenship. He made money by washing cars until he could get it.
3.) He took Camila to audition on ‘X-Factor’ for her 15th birthday. Instead of a traditional quinceanera, Camila asked for her family to take her to audition for the X-Factor. So her parents, sister, and grandmother took the 12-hour track to North Carolina. She would later be placed in the girl group Fifth Harmony, the group she would later reach star status singing with. The group would come in thrid place in the competition. Needless to say, it was a good decision.
4.) ‘First Man’ is on Camila’s sophomore solo album. Yes, the song that she performed at the Grammy’s is on her second studio album “Romance.” You can hear the song as the final track on the album. The beautiful song is about how her father was the first man to really love her and she will always know that.
5.) He has one other daughter besides Camila. Alejandro is not the father of an only child. He has one other daughter named Sofia who is 12-years-old.
Now that you know more about Alejandro Cabello, you can understand why his daughter would want to dedicate a performance to him. Yes, she loves Shaun Mendes but she can dedicate songs to her loving father as well. The one that risked everything for her and the one that helped start her career is worthy of some praise. The song and performance were well deserved and did a good job of showing off the singer’s talents on such a big stage.
