Meghan Markle is fighting for the betterment of new mothers in her open letter to the US Congress.
HollywoodLife reported that the Duchess of Sussex wrote about her and Prince Harry’s life with two kids and requested paid family leave.
This open letter was shared on the Paid Leave for All website, the US campaign of organizations pushing for paid medical and family leave nationally.
Life With Two Children
Markle admitted in her letter that, though her second daughter Lili’s birth brought her and her family joy back in June, the experience has not always been easy.
The Blast previously reported that the couple’s spokesperson detailed their daughter’s name as Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.
“Lilibet” is the nickname of her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, while “Diana” was given in honor of her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.
In the letter published October 20, the 40-year-old wrote that, like any parent, she and her partner were overjoyed and overwhelmed by her daughter’s birth.
The mother-of-two described life with 2-year-old Archie and 4-months-old Lili, explaining that making a living and raising children are both critical, and parents should not have to choose between either.
Calling For A Better Course Of Action
Markle wrote that “No family should have to choose between earning a living and having the freedom to take care of their child.”
The former “Suits” star also said that a comprehensive paid leave plan could also cover the care of a loved one and parents themselves.
The Duchess said that taking care of a child means taking care of a community and country because when paid leave is a right, it creates a foundation.
The activist said this foundation “helps address mental health outcomes, health care costs, and economic strength at the starting line.”
Markle directed her letter to political juggernauts, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The former actress said paid leave is about putting families above politics and is an unrestricted national right.
A New York Romance!
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not forget to make time for themselves while carrying out their parental and work duties.
In September, The Blast reported that the family made plans for their first-ever public trip since moving to California and their first visit to New York City in the fall.
A source told PageSix the trip would be a more “romantic” one for the parents. The New York getaway also marks a return to work for the Sussex’s following Lili’s birth.
