Amidst a period of great upheaval for the royal family, the reputation of its remaining members has become more important than ever. Thankfully, a new poll suggests that Prince William, who is second in line for the throne, remains the most popular royal in the UK.
The poll, which subdivided its results into Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers, gave William high marks with every age group. Although William does the best across the board, his wife Kate Middleton also performed well with every group.
The results were more mixed for Prince Charles, who has relatively high support from baby boomers, but is less popular among millennials, who are much more likely to believe that the monarchy should be done away with entirely.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, Meghan Markle performed the worst among every group, and Prince Harry wasn’t far behind her. Given their recent announcement that they would be stepping back from the UK and spending less time there, it makes sense that they would lose popularity there.
Although Markle was the most unpopular, Prince Charles had the biggest spread in support between generations, with 61% of baby boomers approving of him and only 22% of millennials doing so.
The future king may want to get some advice from his son on how to improve those numbers. Prince William had 70% approval among baby boomers and 42% support among millennials. Millennials remain more skeptical of the monarchy in general, with 29% saying that it should be abolished altogether.
Still, a majority of all three age groups polled are still in favor of the institution in the UK. Popularity has to be an issue of great concern inside the royal family right now. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s shocking announcement could easily lead to Brits worrying about the future of the monarchy.
As long as Prince William remains popular, though, those fears can be somewhat alleviated. If he remains that popular when he’s king, his reign may be good and long.
The upheaval hasn’t been entirely contained inside the halls of Buckingham Palace, though. After Brexit, the entire country of Britain was thrown into turmoil, and the past five years have been tumultuous for the entire country.
Harry and Meghan’s announcement, along with the recent revelations about Prince Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, have only added more fuel to that fire. As long as Prince William doesn’t get himself into too much trouble, though, it seems the royal family will remain relatively stable.
