With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moving away from their duties as members of the royal family, the pressure is only mounting for the members of the royal family that remain. Prince William and Kate Middleton are feeling the pressure more than anyone else, at least according to some royal experts.
Although Harry and Meghan’s decision to exit the royal family may have been good for them, they’ve left a gaping hole in their wake that will likely be filled by the Cambridges.
According to a source that spoke to The Mirror, the decision may have had ramifications that Harry and Meghan didn’t anticipate. “Harry and Meghan deciding to up sticks and leave without any thought about how it could affect them is pretty selfish,” the source said.
The source continued, explaining “If the Sussexes are only here half the year then it will fall to William and Kate to pick up the slack with more engagements, more pressure, and that has not even been considered.”
Reports also suggest that Kate Middleton could bear the brunt of this additional responsibility, and be forced to balance her increased public duties against her three children.
Royal expert Daniela Elser wrote in an Australian outlet: “Unfortunately for Kate, she faces having to bear the brunt of this royal world order. There is no getting away from the uncomfortable fact that no matter how unfair (or un-feminist) it is for Kate to be constantly pitched against Meghan, this situation is only going to be thrown into overdrive in the coming months and years.”
Even without this recent announcement from Meghan and Harry, 2020 was shaping up to be a big year for the royals. As the Queen is aging, there have been rumors that she too would step away from many of her public duties.
This would only mean more work for William and Kate, and it also means that Elizabeth’s son Charles will have to step into the spotlight as he prepares to become king after spending the majority of his life as a prince.
One body language expert even suggested that the burden of their increased roles was having an impact on both Kate and William’s posture. “It’s unusual to see William and Kate with such rounded shoulders,” Blanca Cobb told Cosmopolitan. “It could be that they’re figuratively feeling the weight or pressure of the situation with Harry and Meghan, so it’s weighing them down a bit.”
In the year ahead, that pressure isn’t likely to subside. In fact, as Harry and Meghan step back, it may only increase.
