Becoming a part of any new family can be a challenge, but there may be no family more intimidating than the royal family. Ultimately, it seems the challenges of the royal family were not worth it for Meghan Markle or Prince Harry. The couple recently announced that they would be stepping back from their royal duties, including a renunciation of their titles.

Now, one insider is claiming that that decision is in part because of issues happening behind closed doors.

In fact, one insider told Us Weekly that there was a lot of "drama and backstabbing" inside the royal family that Markle was not totally prepared for.

The source continued, saying "Meghan knew life as a royal wouldn’t be easy. But nothing prepared her for the constant criticism and drama and backstabbing that goes on behind palace doors."

The source also noted that Prince Harry was less than pleased with the way his family had handled Markle's arrival as well.

"To say he’s upset about the way the royals and the U.K. press have treated Meghan is an understatement," the source told the magazine.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams reinforced the sources claims. "It’s clear royal pressures have made them deeply unhappy," Fitzwilliams said. "They’re going to do things their way."

Although the announcement of their plans came as a shock for the Queen and the rest of the royal family, it seems the family is now largely supportive of Harry and Meghan's decision.

After a meeting with Harry and other members of the royal family, the queen released a statement that indicated her support. "My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family," the statement said.

Meghan and Harry's formal relinquishing of duties is likely to happen this Spring, and the couple have already made it clear that they don't plan on taking public funds in their new lives.

While it's unlikely that they'll be able to remain totally under the radar, even if they step back from their public duties, this change could allow them to lead lives that are more in line with what they want. They'll certainly have to deal with the British press less frequency at a minimum.
