Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have continued to make tabloid front pages despite leaving their royal duties and relocating to California with their child, Archie. It almost seems like no matter what this couple does; they’ll always be quoted in a blog post or by a news outlet.
However, even the pair are guilty of giving tabloids what to talk about. From the birth of their second child and first daughter to an explosive interview with the unmatched Oprah Winfrey, this family is not relenting when it comes to speaking their truth.
This week, it was Markle in particular who made headlines, as her former comments resurfaced where she appeared to foreshadow her royal exit. In a 2015 interview with InStyle, a pre-royal Markle spoke about priorities and the importance of saying no. And as they resurfaced since this week, her comments have gone viral.
“I think the biggest part of being a girl boss in the office, at home, or anywhere you go is just knowing your value,” Markle explained. “As you get older, you become more comfortable in your skin and comfortable in saying no to things.”
When speaking about success, she later continued, “Be able to delegate, because there are some things that you just can’t do by yourself. I often joke on set that it takes a village to raise an actress. But building a strong team around you and being able to really communicate well with them is part of what’s going to bring you a higher level of success.”
She also expressed the importance of a work-life balance, which she didn’t get when living in the UK. “Take things with a grain of salt and find balance within your life. I think you have to make time for yourself so that work doesn’t become the end-all-be-all.”
The Royal Exit, Explained
In January 2020, Harry and Markle announced their intentions to “step back” from their duties as senior royal family members.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they wrote in an Instagram statement. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”
They admitted that their new lives would involve relocation to North America. They also intended to leave their son, Archie, in Canada under the care of Markle’s friend Jessica Mulroney and a nanny following the family’s Christmas celebrations there.
“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” they added.
“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
About ‘Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace’
After releasing two soapy, made-for-TV flicks about Prince Harry and Markle, Lifetime cable channel put out a third, which came out on September 6, 2020.
Per TVLine, the synopsis read, “The movie will dramatize ‘the couple’s controversial conscious uncoupling from the crown, after the birth of their son Archie.'”
The movie detailed the struggles of the new parents and the unique challenges of being part of the royal family, which ultimately led Harry and Markle to give up their royalties to forge a new life on their terms.
Jordan Dean of “The Punisher” played Harry, and Sydney Morton of “She’s Gotta Have It” played Markle.
The action of “Escaping the Palace” began after the couple’s second anniversary as they made their first appearance after the birth of baby Archie at Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday celebration.
Reactions From The Buckingham Palace
Hours after the announcement, Buckingham Palace issued its statement.
“Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage,” the palace said at the time. “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
The statement also expressed that the Duke and Duchess were no longer working members of the royal family. Therefore, any decisions they make concerning media commitments are a matter for them.
“As non-working MRF they are under no obligation to inform the Royal Household of such plans,” the statement concluded.
Markle And Harry’s Second Child
On June 4, 2021, Markle and Harry welcomed their second child to the world. A spokesperson for the couple released a statement confirming the happy news.
“It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Markle, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet’ Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world. Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA,” it read.
Per the statement, Lili is named after her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth and her late grandmother, Princess Diana.
The announcement also included a message of thanks, which read, “The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family.”
