During the massive royal wedding, they were seen as rock stars, with millions of people watching them with envy as they took a carriage ride surrounded by screaming fans. I’m not talking about the recent wedding of The Duke and Duchess Of Sussex, no, I’m talking about the 2011 wedding of The Duke and Duchess Of Cambridge.
When they first got engaged, and subsequently tied the knot in the biggest royal wedding since William’s parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana got married, they were the most famous couple on the planet.
If there was ever such a thing as a power couple, they were it. Prince William and Kate Middleton had a love story that went back almost a decade, and now, here they were, showing the world a real life fairy tale.
Originally, they were massively popular, especially when they introduced the world to their first born baby, Prince George. But, as time went by, they retreated into themselves, becoming a little more stuffy.
Kate was criticized for her fashion sense, wearing dresses that made her look a decade older, and William looked uncomfortable in his role.
Compared to his brother Prince Harry, William has always been known as the more serious one, fully aware of the role in which he will one day take on.
Whereas his brother, the happy go lucky spare, was constantly laughing, joking, and dancing on official engagements as if the role of King might suit him better.
Fast forward to 2019; After Harry married Meghan in 2018, he went from one of the most beloved members of the royal family to one that often elicited eye rolls.
In the beginning, Harry and Meghan were seen as the new stars of the show. A royal couple who would modernize the monarchy, with Meghan bringing some Hollywood sparkle to the dusty halls of Buckingham Palace.
Unfortunately, Harry and Meghan made a series of missteps that drew huge amounts of scathing headlines. They were especially criticized for their hypocrisy after they touted the devastating effects of climate change while taking a series of private jets on vacation.
One couple that had an amazing 2019, was William and Kate who stepped up their game and saw something of an “annus mirabilis,” as the Daily Mail called it.
With the splitting of their households, the royal couples saw competition between themselves, especially when it came to official engagements and coverage of those.
Last July, the author of Harry and Meghan, Katie Nicholl, claimed courtiers at the palace were worried about the couples being “pitted against each other,” though this was pretty inevitable from the beginning.
Last year, with William and Kate going on tour to Pakistan and Harry and Meghan going on tour in Africa, there was a real effort made to make sure the couples diaries did not clash.
Now, there is a worry that there will be major clashes and competition between the Sussexes and Cambridges since Harry and Meghan have stepped back from the royal family and will be doing their own thing.
Will Meghan make headlines with a new Instagram post on the day Kate has an official engagement, wiping her off the front page?
It’s more likely that The Duke and Duchess Of Cambridge will see their star power rise as the royal family seek to slim down the monarchy, and Harry and Meghan are now on the outside.
William and Kate are now able to take their place at the top without anyone else fighting for it.
