Will Queen Elizabeth 'Punish' Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle For Stepping Down?

Queen Elizabeth received news about the stepping down of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with disappointment. The royal couple plans to step aside and cease recognition as part of the royal family. If their announcement is anything to go by, they plan to leave North America. Queen Elizabeth is specifically upset with the decision, mainly because the duo did not consult her before their decision and announcement. According to the couple, managing life under the public limelight is quite a daunting task. The young couple seems not to buy the idea of living under the spotlight with the Sussexes suing companies publishing their private details.

Harry and Markle revealed through their Instagram post that their decision had come after a series of internal discussions. However, Queen Elizabeth termed the talks as being still at a preliminary stage. According to her, the consultations involved complex issues that would take long to work out. The decision by the Sussexes hurt not only the Queen but also other senior royal family members. According to a source close to the Palace, Harry and Meghan did not consult anyone in the royal family. Prince Harry only notified his brother, Prince William, only ten minutes before his post.

The Instagram post by the Sussexes was followed by a mood of disappointment in the palace. The following day, newspapers made headlines of a dismayed Queen Elizabeth following a royal family split. The Standard Evening Newspaper of London noted defiance of clear instructions and that the couple would receive punishment for the same. A source, who is a member of the royal family, indicated that the couple’s decision signified disrespect to the Prince of Wales and The Queen, both of whom gave lifetime commitment to the crown.

Going by the report issued, The Prince and Meghan ignored orders from the Queen concerning the Megxit. The Queen had instructed Harry not to make the Megxit announcement during their one-on-one meeting at Sandringham. The prince had also received a warning from his father against making decisions about his role in the future in the royal family. NDTV World News reported Richard Fitzwilliams’ — a royal expert— said that the royal couple opted to “go rogue,” and that could result in “very dire consequences.”

However, Prince Harry and Meghan held talks with Prince Charles, Prince William, and the Queen on January 13, with her highness later terming the discussions as ‘constructive’. The statement is contrary to the previous punishment reports as she declares her support for grandson to start a new life. However, she disclosed her stand on the matter, saying she preferred the couple to remain part of the family and carry on their royal duties. The Queen’s statement notes the situation still poses complex work and issues to resolve.
