The crown jewel of awards season, The Oscars are almost upon us once again. This year the controversy over the lack of diversity in the nominee pool has certainly angered quite a few people. Some folks are going as far as to call the nominations "so white".

This may be another situation that will contribute to the award ceremony falling out of favor with a lot of people. Leading to the decline in viewers of the actual ceremony. Does the call for foul play though, have some merit to it?

The Nominees Are In

There is an argument to be made that the Academy played it extra safe this year. Going with a lot of bonified actors to fill out the ballet. The most "talented" category this year could very well be the actor in a supporting role category. It features nominations to Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Brad Pitt. Brad is the clubhouse leader having won the Golden Globe, but who really knows what could go down. Notably absent in this category is Jaime Foxx for his performance in Just Mercy.

Who Are The Actor's Who Did Get The Nod?

There are actually only two actors that are part of a minority group that got the nod as nominees for their performances. Although a lot of people are tagging Antonio Banderas as a white actor that is not the case. The Spaniard is nominated for best actor in a leading role for his performance in Pain and Glory. Making him the only Latino nominated.

The only other minority nominee was African American actress Cynthia Erivo for her role as Harriet Tubman in the drama Harriet. A film that is only nominated for original song!

The Notable Snubs

One of the reason's why there is such an outrage due to the lack of diversity in this year's nominees is the fact that there are a lot of good movies that feature minority actors. Such is the case for films such as the previously mentioned Just Mercy that features really powerful performances from the likes of Jaime Foxx and Micheal B Jordan.

On the other hand, there is, of course, JLO's performance in Hustlers. That has actually earned her a win for the best-supporting actress at other award shows. Yet was not enough to earn her a spot in the Oscars.

No Women Up For Best Director Award

Another one of the nominations that people had issues with was the final ballot for the best director. The award is up for grabs between some of the best in the industry. With Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino being nominated. Yet, there are going to be no women up for the award.

The biggest snub in this category goes to Greta Gerwig. Who is basically nominated her achievements in every other department. Yet she could not find a way to be nominated for her efforts in the directing chair.
