Earlier this weekend, rumors hit the Internet that English actor Michael Caine, 88, was planning on retiring from the film industry.

However, he quickly walked back that statement and tweeted on October 16, “I haven’t retired and not a lot of people know that.”

He quickly clarified his stance regarding his acting sabbatical, explaining, “I don’t have any… there haven’t been any offers, obviously, for two years because nobody’s been making any movies that I wanna do, but also I’m 88. There’s not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who’s 88, you know?”

However, he is not the only household name to announce a temporary retirement from acting this weekend.

Who Is It?

“Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds took to Instagram to explain that he was taking a “sabbatical” from acting after working on the film “Spirited” with Will Ferrell.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Reynolds wrote, “That’s a wrap for me on Spirited. Not sure I’d have been ready to say yes to a film this challenging even three years ago. Singing, dancing and playing in the sandbox with Will Ferrell made a whole lotta dreams come true. And this is my second film with the great @octaviaspencer…”

He added, “Perfect time for a little sabbatical from movie making. I’m gonna miss every second of working with this obscenely gifted group of creators and artists. These days, kindness matters as much as talent. I’ve been lucky to work with folks who are flush with both.”

Celebrity Support

Comments immediately began to flood his Instagram. Most expressed enthusiasm for the creative talents behind the project and were enthused about seeing the duo perform together on-screen.

Co-star Octavia Spencer wrote, “You’re an amazing actor/singer and producer. I had a blast working with you, Will, and this outstanding cast and crew! Enjoy your downtime.”

However, “Gossip Girl” actress and Reynold’s wife, Blake Lively, couldn’t help but take a friendly jab at the “Free Guy” actor, teasing, “Michael Caine did it first.”

The celebrity couple, who is famous for the pranks that they pull on each other, have three daughters together. After tying the knot in 2012, their daughter James was born in 2014. Inez was born in 2016, and Betty was born in 2019.

If the names Betty, James, and Inez sound familiar and you’re a Taylor Swift fan, you might recognize the names from Swift’s eighth studio album, “folklore.” Her song “Betty” features both the names of James and Inez, which prompted fans to speculate that the name of the couple’s third daughter was named Betty.

After the album dropped, the couple admitted that the rumors were true and even revealed that the baby voice that appears at the beginning of her “Gorgeous” track on her “Reputation” album belongs to their daughter, James.

Why Break From Acting?

Although Reynolds is one of the most sought-after actors in the industry, he still takes some time out for his family.

In 2019, he revealed that “Blake and I don’t do movies at the same time. If she is doing a movie in Thailand and I am doing a movie in Vancouver we would just never see each other. We operate as a unit, and that works really well for us. The kids stay with us, and the family stays together, and that is where home is. So if we are in Spain or Utah or New York, as long as we are together, we’re home.”
