Twitter is zero’ing in on Wendy Williams following the “Hot Topic” part of her show – the 55-year-old’s words and actions are now themselves proving to be a hot topic.
Wendy was talking about actor Joaquin Phoenix on “The Wendy Williams Show” when she actually used her finger to pull the corner of her mouth into what was her refabrication of what she considered to be Joaquin’s facial structure. The actor has a notable scar above his lip.
Here’s the YouTube video – you’ll want to take yourself to the 11-minute mark to catch Wendy’s moment.
You’ll notice that Wendy’s audience did laugh at her words. Speaking of the “Walk the Line” actor, Wendy did, well, what Wendy does.
“He’s got that good nose that dips way down and he’s happy with, so am I,” Wendy began.
“And when he shaves off his moustache he’s got a hairline fracture. He’s got one of those – what do you call it? Cleft lip pallette.’
Wendy then lifted her lip to mimic a cleft palette.
“I find it to be very attractive,” she added.
This is Wendy Williams making fun of Joaquin Phoenix because of his cleft lip. She said “he is handsome as long as he doesn't shave…he has that hair lip.” Calling a cleft lip “hair lip” is INCREDIBLY offensive!!! #wendywilliams #stopwatchinghershow#BoycottWendyWilliams pic.twitter.com/qxvHQ6841g

Social media – and celebrities – have been reacting. One sufferer of cleft lip left the following tweet.
“The gesture she makes with her fingers to her mouth is one I encountered many times as a child being bullied for my cleft and even today I shudder when I see this. Horrific and inexcusable.”
“This is the $h*t that boils my blood.
If someone said “yeah that black person is not & sexy, if they just didn’t have that big nose or big lips” all hell would break loose…. But its ok to belittle & mock anyone & everyone else because it’s “just” a “joke”….,” another tweeted.
Meanwhile, over in the U.K., British TV presenter Carol Vordeman took to Twitter to call Wendy out.
“As Ambassador for Cleft Lip and Palate Association @CLAPACOMMUNITY I really am disgusted by this @wendywilliams.. Mimicing a cleft lip, and making a joke about it, is disgraceful,” Carol wrote.
“Have you any idea the pain and operations a child with cleft must go through as they grow? Please RT,” she added.
It’s been circulating. A user replied to Carol, stating:
“For a solid 10 seconds she used her finger to mimic a cleft lip while the audience laughed. Imagine how my 5 year old would take it if he saw it? @WendyWilliams.”
Wendy does not appear to have responded to the backlash. The talk show host is known for her spats – particularly towards other celebrities – having recently called rising sensation Lizzo out after the “Truth Hurts” singer wore a thong to a Laker’s Game in December 2019.
Wendy also managed to throw shade at Taylor Swift after her 2019 AMA Award win.
Cleft lip palette is a fairly common birth condition resulting in a baby’s mouth and top lip forming incorrectly. The result is a visible raised lip, often causing speech and food consumption problems. It is generally corrected via surgery, however individuals with no correction frequently find themselves subject to bullying.
