Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just dropped a royal bombshell! While many people thought this couple would come back from their 6 week hiatus, start the new year fresh, and take up their royal duties again, this is clearly not what they had in mind.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced their intention to step back as ‘senior royals’ and become “financially independent.”
Public opinion is very divided, with many royal correspondents criticizing them, and quite a few celebrity pals praising them for the decision.
Piers Morgan has been feuding with Meghan Markle since she apparently ghosted him after meeting Prince Harry.
He’s been one of the most outspoken critics of the royal couple, and with the recent news, he’s let his opinions be known.
In an article for the Daily Mail, Piers started off writing, “Who the f**k do they think they are?Seriously? I’ve seen some disgraceful royal antics in my time, but for pure arrogance, entitlement, greed, and wilful disrespect, nothing has ever quite matched the behaviour of the ‘Duke and Duchess of Sussex.’ I put inverted commas around those titles because I sincerely hope they won’t exist much longer.”
Well, clearly Piers didn’t hold back in his feelings, though he’s expressing what most people are thinking.
There has been major criticism over the Sussexes claim that they will be “financially independent” when this won’t entirely be the case.
Piers continued his scathing criticism, writing, “In other words, they want to be super-woke celebrities (with all the outrageous ‘Do as we say not as we do’ hectoring hypocrisy they’ve already brought to that status) who get to keep all the trappings of royal life without any of the hard, boring bits and the right to cash in on their status however they choose.”
Royal photographer Arthur Edwards was more diplomatic in his critique, however, he definitely blamed Meghan for the major shift we’ve seen in Prince Harry.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, he said, “I’m sad he’s going, every tour he’s been on has been fun. And the way he interacted with the children on our most recent trip, it’s sad we won’t see much more of him. I won an award for that picture of him at a the school in Luton.”
He continued, “Before Harry met Meghan they (Prince William and Prince Harry) were very close. I fell in love with my wife, it didn’t change my life. I just think it’s really sad what’s happening.”
Clearly, many share the same opinion, feeling Prince Harry has greatly changed since meeting Meghan Markle, and much of the blame for the recent decision, and rift with Prince William is being put on her.
Royal aides and those behind the scenes at Buckingham Palace are reportedly furious at the couple’s decision, especially because they didn’t give a heads up before their announcement.
A royal aide told the Daily Mail, “People had bent over backwards for them. They were given the wedding they wanted, the house they wanted, the office they wanted, the money they wanted, the staff they wanted, the tours they wanted and had the backing of their family. What more did they want?”
This is a good point, and is most likely how many critics feel about the couple. With so many privileges, why does nothing seem to be good enough?
Their recent decision will have implications for years to come; not just for Meghan and Harry, but for the entire royal family.
Unfortunately, this is probably not the way the Queen wanted to start a new year and it makes one wonder what next?
