Even R. Kelly‘s most fervent defenders are beginning to leave his side. There was a time when it seemed impossible that his girlfriend, Azriel Clary, would not support the singer. Now, reports suggest that Clary has moved out of Kelly’s apartment, and she’s beginning to speak out about what really happened while she was dating him.
In a new video, Clary has admitted that she lied multiple times to defend the singer and help him cover up his alleged sex crimes.
On Jan. 8, Clary went to Kelly’s Chicago condo to retrieve the rest of her belongings. While she was there, she made a video and posted it on Instagram Live. She was at the condo with another man, and that upset Kelly’s other girlfriend, Joycelyn Savage.
“Why would you invite grown a** men in here?” Savage yelled in a clip obtained by The Neighborhood Talk. “That’s disrespectful. You know that’s wrong. This is his house. You disrespectful. You so evil.”
Eventually, the two appear to get in some sort of physical confrontation, as the phone is dropped and the yelling continues. After the brawl ended, Clary began to make damaging claims against Kelly.
“Rob [has] been lying to all of y’all,” Clary said. “And he had people like me lying for him. That’s why we never watched the documentary,” she continued, referring to Lifetime’s documentary “Surviving R. Kelly,” in which more than a dozen women claim the singer sexually abused them.
Clary’s parents also appeared in the documentary, claiming that Kelly had begun having sex with their daughter when she was 17, and that he had brainwashed her.
Clary continued by explaining that she had also lied during a 2019 interview with Gayle King. In that interview, Clary strongly defended Kelly against the accusations that had been made against him in the documentary. She even went so far as to say that her parents were lying to blackmail Kelly for his money.
Kelly’s lawyer Steve Greenberg responded to Clary’s new statement, saying: “I have a statement written by Azriel that she provided to me, voluntarily, after Robert was already in jail, that said she never had sex with him when she was underaged.”
Greenberg continued by suggesting the clip only existed to generate social buzz. “As far as this little catfight, it is clear that it was staged to try and boost social media popularity,” Greenberg said, in one of the most condescending statements of all time.
