What's Rust About?

Written and directed by Joel Souza, "Rust" takes place in the American Midwest in the 1880s. A 13-year-old boy is left to take care of himself and his younger brother after the death of his parents; however, he must go on the run with his estranged grandfather when he is sentenced to death for the accidental killing of a local rancher.

Baldwin plays the role of the grandfather, outlaw Harland Rust. The grandson, Lucas, is played by "Boardwalk Empire" actor Brady Noon. Ackles will take on the role of Marshal Wood Helm and "Vikings" star Travis Fimmel will play bounty hunter Fenton "Preacher" Lang. Both are determined to track down the outlaws and bring them to justice.

The role hits several key notes for Ackles. The boy originally hails from Kansas, which is where both Winchester brothers were born. Ackles' character of Dean Winchester was also forced to fend for his younger brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) after they were left alone following the death of their mother and the frequent hunting trips taken by their father.

It will be interesting to see what "Supernatural" similarities Ackles will bring to his new role.

What About 'The Winchesters' Prequel?

In addition to his new acting role, Ackles is also set to reprise his role as Dean Winchester as he narrates the "Supernatural" prequel series, "The Winchesters."

The show will focus on the lives of Winchester parents John and Mary before the Winchester brothers were born.

Ackles and his wife will also serve as executive producers on the show through their company Chaos Machine Productions. The show will be written and produced by another "Supernatural" alum: co-executive producer Robbie Thompson.

Although some fans still want to continue the adventures of Sam and Dean, even despite their 15-year journey on screen, some fans are embracing the new plot.

One fan tweeted, "I actually think The Winchesters is a really good idea for a prequel. We know almost nothing about John & Mary, about their lives, we know like 3 days of their past and a few minor details. With @rthompson1138 and@JensenAckles being focused on canon, I think it could be great."

Both "Rust" and "The Winchesters" are still in development. No release date has yet been announced.
