The Tragic Accident That Caused His Death

After he failed to show up for a rehearsal on June 18, 2016, friends of Yelchin were shocked to see a heartbreaking sight.

He was a victim of what was called a "freak accident." He was found trapped between his car (Jeep Grand Cherokee) and a brick wall.

The Cherokee (his car) had gear formats that confused drivers. It is believed as Yelchin exited his car to check his closed gate and mail, the vehicle reportedly rolled back down his slightly elevated driveway, trapping him against a pillar and a security fence. Reports revealed that his lungs were crushed and severely damaged, and with no immediate aid, this led to his death.

As a tribute, “Star Trek” executives revealed Chekov's (Yelchin's) role would not be recast and that the character would be written out entirely. His parents sought to raise awareness to prevent similar tragic incidents from occurring in the future. In Charlie Puth’s words; See you Again, Yelchin, we miss you.
