Depression hits all kinds of people from all walks of life, even those who the public perceives as having a perfect life. Unfortunately, many times, we never hear about these struggles until it's ultimately too late and that person has gotten addicted to drugs or even worse, taken their own life.

For Katy Perry, despite all the fortune, fame, and success she's had over the years, she's also had several bouts of major depression that have made it difficult for her to live through.

Her latest episode was so intense that she didn't think that she'd ever escape from its grasp. In a recent interview with Vogue Magazine, the pop singer opened up to what it was like dealing with the depression and how she was eventually able to get out of the funk.

Her most recent experience with depression during the 2017 to 2018 year was by far her most difficult experience and she feared that she might not get out of the bout alive.

"I became depressed and I did not want to get out of bed," she vulnerably explained. "In the past, I had been able to overcome it, but this time something happened that made me fall down too many flights of stairs. I had to really go on a mental health journey."

And while it's certainly hard to talk about, especially when it comes to a public figure who many people look to as what and who they should aspire to be, Perry thinks it's something important to talk about.

"We talk about all our different organs but never talk about our brain, which keeps us functioning the most," the singer admitted.

Inspiration and Empowerment in New Music

Fortunately, she was able to survive one of the darkest moments in her life. As a result, her music became that much more inspiring and empowering, as she put her heart and healing process into it.

"... If you divide my songs, they would be 50 percent [about] empowerment, 25 percent party and 25 percent romantic. They are heavy on hope and positivity, like going towards the light. I reject the darkness," Perry said.

And while Perry doesn't designate a particular reason that she fell into another bout of depression, it's worth noting that he failed marriage to ex Russell Brand might have had something to do with it. Nonetheless, she's found a new anchor to hold her down and give her hope in life.

Perry just recently celebrated her engagement to actor and Pirates of the Caribbean star, Orlando Bloom. Perry claims that her new fiance has been the one to keep her grounded and provides unrivaled positivity in her life.

"I've gone to therapy, been through the Hoffman Process, done plant medicine.... And I have a partner who is also all about finding a balance — Orlando, who is on a spiritual journey of his own," she revealed.

"He's an anchor who holds me down, and he's very real. He's not the number one fan of Katy Perry, but he's the number one fan of Kathryn Hudson."

The two have been seemingly enjoying life, as is evident through the social media platforms that Perry has. And it's wonderful that she's been able to find hope in life again, as so many others that suffer through depression don't get so lucky.

As for a wedding date? The couple has not put anything to paper yet, but both are taking their new engagement in stride and enjoying the moment.

Perry is also preparing for another season of American Idol where she'll once again be alongside fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, which is set to appear on ABC in February.

Here's to hoping that Perry won't have to deal with the struggles of depression again. She certainly has some reasons to be optimistic for 2020 with her new fiance and the upcoming season of American Idol.
