Carrie Underwood and husband, Mike Fisher had plans to have their children closer in age so they would grow up together and be as close as they could be. According to People, Underwood said, “We initially in our lives kind of wanted our kids a little closer in age. That didn’t happen, because God has a different plan sometimes.”
Instead of giving Isaiah a little brother about one or two years younger than him, she suffered three miscarriages when trying to get pregnant for their second child. It wasn’t until almost four years before she had a little brother Jacob.
Although she and her husband didn’t plan to have their children have almost four years between them, she is very grateful for having two healthy boys. She is very grateful for Isaiah since he is so helpful to mom and dad around the house.
She said, “Being almost 5 years old, he’s just so helpful, and he looks out for his little brother. And he’s good at [helping] when you ask him to do something; he’s a very task-oriented child. So if you ask him to do something, he wants to feel helpful and he wants to do it and be a part of things.”
Although she is also very grateful for her younger son, Jacob as well, she is still mourning the three miscarriages she had in between her two son’s births. She said you wait for things to stop hurting at some point. Then, when you tell people about it, you don’t really expect them to say the same thing happened to them. She is talking about her friends who she thought she knew everything about. However, when she told them about the three miscarriages she had, some of them would break down and cry and say they also suffered a miscarriage.
Underwood said that was something she should have known about them already seeing as how they are her close friends. However, she also said, “But letting yourself go there … other people that are going through the same thing. It kind of connects you to them. I will always mourn those children, those lives that were a shooting star, a breath of smoke, but I have Jacob, and he is incredible. He is the sweetest little baby. At the time it was awful, and it still hurts, but it’s kind of like ‘OK, I have this.’”
Although Underwood never meant to be the spokesperson for miscarriages, she wasn’t afraid to talk about what she went through. This was after realizing the topic was a taboo one and it shouldn’t be. No one should ever be afraid to speak up about having a miscarriage.
She realized miscarriages are not an easy subject to talk about but she wasn’t afraid to speak up about hers. She also realized she knows more than one family who is their friends and, once she opened up and talked about having them, she said they seemed to be like ‘me too!’
She said that with them being her friends, she felt she should have already known this about them. But since people seem like they are afraid to talk about miscarriages, she is speaking up for herself and the rest of them.
