It seems to happen so often these days. People who are in the spotlight have old social media posts from when they were teenagers dug up and tossed into the mix. The bad thing, though, is they're usually not of a positive nature.

It's unfortunate that people take pleasure in trying to expose others, especially because these posts were made during teenage and developmental years. Maturity and tolerance come with age.

This situation is no different for the Cuban-American singer, Camila Cabello, who has issued an official apology condemning her past words and perspective, citing continued growth and tolerance.

A Formal Apology

In speaking with E! News, Cabello issued her apology to her fans and anyone else who took her past social media posts offensively. "When I was younger, I used language that I'm deeply ashamed of and will regret forever," the singer began in a lengthy statement.

"I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it. I apologized then and I apologize now. I would never intentionally hurt anyone and I regret it from the bottom of my heart. As much as I wish I could, I can't go back in time and change things I said in the past. But once you know better, you do better and that's all I can do."

With Age Comes Maturity

Cabello further went on to share that since the time of the posts, she's grown up, allowing her to mature and learn from her past mistakes.

"I'm now 22, I'm an adult, and I've grown and learned and am conscience and aware of the history and the paint it carries in a way I wasn't before. Those mistakes don't represent the person I am or a person I've ever been to. I only stand and have ever stood for love and inclusivity... My heart has never, even then, had any ounce of hate of divisiveness. The truth is I was embarrassingly ignorant and unaware."

Defending Hypocrisy

As a popular musical artist, Cabello is aware of the platform that she is privileged to have and knows that she must use it to spread the good in the world. Cabello shared, "I use my platform to speak out about injustice and inequality and I'll continue doing that," concluding the statement.

Fans on social media were quick to provide their reactions to the news of the apology, as well as, her name abruptly trending on Twitter and other outlets.

One Twitter user was quick to defend her and the hypocrisy surrounding other celebrities who apologize for past comments that were deemed racist. "This trend of hating on Camila Cabello needs to end. She apologized, (just like every other artist who has been in the same situation) so how can you justify immediately forgiving them and not Camila? I’m not a fan, but even I can see that you guys are taking things too far," they posted.

Offering of Support and Encouragement

Other fans defended her, acknowledging that everybody is human and makes mistakes. One social media user shared, "Even though @Camila_Cabello is racist, I still love her music, and I did go to the #RepTour to see her. We all f--k up, no one is perfect."

Another offered her support sharing on Twitter, "@Camila_Cabello Love You Baby Girl! Hold Your Head Up!!"

What will come from these racists remarks and the subsequent apology, we don't know. It will be something that remains in the minds of some, though, moving forward.
