Comic book writers have gotten into the habit of making their characters “come out.” This week, October 11th marked the national coming-out day for the LBTQ+ community. The latest superhero to come out is none other than Superman! The new comic book is going to serve as a bit of a coming-out party for the superhero. In this case, though it seems that the comic book writers are trying to keep everyone happy. By not making the traditional Superman character come out.
Clark Kent Isn’t The One Coming Out
This is what we mean by not the traditional Superman coming out. The “Superman” that will actually be coming out is actually the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane. He has taken over as “The Man of Steel” in the comic book series titled Superman: Son of Kal-El. The new issue is going to be released by the beginning of next month. However, DC Comics wanted to make sure that they had at least some frames from the comic book to show off for national coming out day.
Everyone Needs A Hero
Writer Tom Taylor, who crafted the story for DC Comics, talked about the need for people to feel represented by the heroes that they read about in comic books. He mentioned that he was very much on board with this form of thinking. He also thanked DC comics for the opportunity that the company gave him to be able to create the character this way saying,
“I’ve always said that everyone needs heroes, and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes, and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea”
DC Is No Stranger To These Types of Narratives
This isn’t the first time that DC has had one of their characters openly come out. Recently Tim Drake one of the main Robin’s in the Batman universe came out as bisexual as well. There was also talk of one of the Green Lantern characters coming out. At the time it was one of the first times a comic dealt with these types of sexual orientation narratives.
Other characters in the Batman animated movies have also been shown as part of the LGBTQ+ community. It is safe to say that this isn’t just a trend for DC. This is actually something that they do on the regular these days.
