For all fans of Reese Witherspoon and Legally Blonde, you're finally getting your wish for the long-awaited third movie next year. Right now, it's rumored that the film will be released sometime in mid-2020 (but uncertain since filming hasn't even started yet). It will have been seventeen years since the last Legally Blonde movie came out in theaters, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and fans of the films are dying to know what Elle is up to now.

It's Not The First Try At A Third Film

While fans are hopeful that this third movie will do justice to the Legally Blonde, they know, and love, sequels (especially if a third one ) can be a gamble. This technically isn't the first stab at a third Legally Blonde movie. In 2009, there was a straight-to-DVD movie called Legally Blondes, which impressed no one. Reese Witherspoon was involved in the project, but Elle Woods did not appear on-screen. Instead, the movie focused on Elle's twin high-school-aged cousins (who are just younger, less interesting clones of Elle). Most fans considered this movie a blatant cash grab that added nothing to Elle's story, and prefer to disregard its existence.

The Musical Was Better Received

While Legally Blondes was a flop, a Legally Blonde musical came out for the first time in 2007. It wasn't received particularly well initially, but the musical has been revived a few times since its first premiere and generally has been more well-liked by audiences. Most would say that the musical isn't as good as the movie, but overall, it's faithful to the character of Elle Woods and can be a fun show with an empowering message for young women.

Reese Witherspoon is certainly eager to do the third film and bring back beloved cast members. It's clear that Witherspoon has a lot of love for the character of Elle Woods and would love to revisit her.

"Legally Blonde 3 will be…so much fun!" said Witherspoon. "So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals, it will have returning cast members. We just need to film it first! That's my hope and dream for Legally Blonde 3."

Where Is Elle Now?

It's been a long time since we last saw Elle Woods, so she could be doing anything at this point. In Legally Blondes, Elle is mentioned as being a successful lobbyist in Washington, DC, but it's hard to know if we should accept that movie as canon. In the last scene of Legally Blonde 2, we saw the newly-married Elle and her husband, Emmett discussing where they wanted to live. As they drove past the White House, Elle gives a coy smile. Could we see Elle in the Oval Office next?
