Most fans of 'Friends' remember the major love triangle of the series; the one with Rachel, Ross, and Joey. Audiences were generally not fans of this particular storyline and were not enthusiastic about the prospect of Rachel and Joey ending up together. Viewers breathed a collective sigh of relief when Rachel and Joey mutually agreed that it wasn't going to work out between them. Because of the show's heavy emphasis on Rachel and Ross's relationship, sometimes it's hard to remember that this was not the only love triangle of the series.

Phoebe Was In The Middle Of An Intense Love Triangle

Yes, during the series, Phoebe was stuck in the middle of an emotional love triangle. There was Mike, with whom Phoebe was deeply in love with, but Mike didn't want to get married again after experiencing a painful divorce. Then there was David, Phoebe's scientist ex-boyfriend, whose only fault was that he lived in Minsk for work. While the two also loved each other, they could never get the timing right. But when David returned from Minsk for good and ready to marry Phoebe, Phoebe realized she had a big decision to make.

Phoebe Chose Mike

We all know that Phoebe ultimately chose Mike Hannigan after he decided to reverse his previous decision about not marrying again. He and Phoebe married in Season 10.

Most people credit Mike winning out, in the end, is thanks to the actor who portrayed him, Paul Rudd. Rudd played the role of Mike with such an earnest, dopey charm that viewers couldn't help but fall in love with him as much as Phoebe did. They had their struggles, but they moved on and have what always appeared to be a happy marriage. It's highly likely that audiences might not have taken to Mike's character had he been played by anyone else other than Rudd.

But Phoebe Could Have Ended Up With David

However, Friends co-creator David Crane just revealed that Phoebe could have just as easily chosen David in the end.

"There was definitely a possibility of that," said Crane. "I mean, we didn't definitively know [who she'd end up with]. They're both amazing actors. I mean, both Paul and Hank are fantastic, and fantastic with her. We sort of went back and forth. I don't even remember all the pieces that led to where we landed, but yeah, it could have gone the other way. Phoebe would have been great with either one."

Phoebe's Choice Was A Surprise To Hank Azaria

No one was more surprised by Phoebe's decision than Hank Azaria, who played the part of David, the scientist.

"No, I didn't know that was the end of David," said Azaria. "The plan always was kind of to bring him back."

"It actually did sting a little bit. Whatever part of me is David, the science guy who went to Minsk, which admittedly is probably a small part of me, but that part of me wanted to end up with Phoebe. So I was sort of sad when I didn't."
