Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding was the stuff of fairytales. They both looked great, and there was a clear feeling of love between them all day long.

Even as Meghan became a part of the royal family, though, she and her husband also broke a few rules at their wedding, and they've been breaking more ever since. It all started with the date of their wedding itself, which had to be approved by Queen Elizabeth II before they could begin preparation.

The date they chose, May 19, 2018, may seem totally fine, but some royal fans were shocked that the queen allowed it. Since the time of Queen Victoria, the month of May has been seen as bad luck in the royal family, so very few weddings happen in that month. “Marry in May, rue the day,” is the saying.

The wedding also happened on a Saturday, when most happen during the week to give citizens a nice day off in the middle of their workweek.

The two also held hands, when many royal couples are discouraged from showing any displays of public affection at their weddings. What's more, instead of spending the night before their ceremonies at separate royal localities, they chose to stay in luxury hotels instead.

Meghan's father also didn't attend the ceremony, which meant that Prince Charles walked her down the aisle. Ahead of the big day, there was a lot of confusion around Markle's father, and after a rumored heart attack, he failed to show up for the ceremony.

As far as the guest list was concerned, Harry and Meghan didn't keep it to the normal British ruling class that often attends royal events. Instead, they invited plenty of famous faces that you wouldn't normally see at a royal wedding.

Those names included plenty of Americans like George and Amal Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, and many of her former coworkers from "Suits." There were also a number of famous Brits in attendance, including David and Victoria Beckham, Idris Elba, and Tom Hardy.

Harry and Meghan's wedding was also strange because, unlike most men in the family, including Prince Phillip and Prince William, Harry chose to wear a wedding ring. They also loosened things up inside the ceremony, asking the choir to do a rendition of “Stand By Me.”

Harry and Meghan may not revolutionize the monarchy in a single day, but through subtle shifts like this, they push the envelope of what's possible in the royal family. These little changes ultimately make a big impact.
