Federal prosecutors have filed new charges against singer R. Kelly after discovering that he may have bribed a government official to get a fake ID for Aaliyah. The singer needed the fake ID in order to proceed with marrying Aaliyah in 1994 when she was only 15.

According to reporting by The New York Times, Aaliyah's ID said she was 18. The new indictment accuses him of making the bribe in Illinois, and only refers to Aaliyah as "Jane Doe #1."

These new allegations are just the latest in a case that New York has been building against R . Kelly, which began with a racketeering indictment in July. In that indictment, the singer was charged with one count of racketeering, and with violating the Mann Act, which makes taking people across state lines for the purpose of prostitution illegal.

One of the long-standing mysteries around Kelly's marriage to Aaliyah was how it could have happened in the first place, given her age.

Kelly's lawyer has claimed that Kelly did not know Aaliyah, who was born Aaliyah Dana Haughton, was 15 at the time. In the marriage license, which was obtained by Vibe Magazine, Aaliyah's age is listed as 18, and that license was issued just one day after Kelly reportedly paid for the fake ID.

In a BET Interview with the couple, both Kelly and Aaliyah tried to avoid questions about her age, and he also produced her debut album "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number."

Aaliyah died in a plane crash in 2001 when she was 22. Kelly is currently being held without bond. The singer is set to stand trial in April on charges of child pornography and obstruction of justice charges in Chicago. He will then stand trial for the indictments he's facing in New York.

This isn't the first time that Kelly has faced charges in this arena. In 2008, he was acquitted on charges that he videotaped himself having sex with a 13-year-old.

"Surviving R. Kelly," a documentary that recently aired on Lifetime, renewed interest in his case, and may have ultimately led to the current slew of charges and accusations that the singer is facing. Just a month after the documentary aired, he was charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal abuse.

In May, the singer sat for an off-the-rails interview with CBS This Morning's Gayle King. In the interview, Kelly lost his cool several times, even as he denied all of the charges against him.
