Earlier this summer, it seemed that the beloved Spider-Man franchise starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker was dead when Disney and Sony were unable to come to an agreement on the future of the films. After massive fan backlash, the two studios were able to come to an agreement that will allow for a new Spider-Man movie to be made, starring Holland, which will be released in 2021.

But there's a funny backstory to how Holland got the happy news that he was going to revive his role as Spider-Man. He was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday and said the whole thing started at a Disney convention.

“We were at D23, which is the big Disney convention, and the news had come out and I was obviously devastated,” Holland said. “I was really upset. All my Marvel friends were there and they were taking like Marvel pictures and I was like [makes sad face] not allowed to be in them. It was awful.”

He said he asked for Disney CEO Bob Iger’s email, and sent him a note. “I just wanted to say, ‘This has been an amazing 5 years of my life. Thank you for changing my life in the best way and I hope we can work together in the future.'”

Iger replied saying that he wanted to talk to Holland over the phone. But after not hearing anything for a few days, Holland was at a bar enjoying some beers.

“I’m like 3 pints in, right? Haven’t eaten much and I get a phone call from an unknown number. I have a feeling. I think this is Bob Iger. But I’m drunk.”

That's when Iger revealed to Holland that there might be a way to make another Spider-Man film work.

“There is a world where we can make this work," Iger said. Holland says what followed were a series of calls with studio executive. “It was really interesting for me to have these two like studio heads like, ‘What do you think?'”

“I weeped,” Holland admitted about his call with Iger. “No, I didn’t weep… I did, yeah. I was really emotional because I felt like it was all coming to an end.”
