We all live in the generations that we do and are accustomed to the types of music and bands that are prevalent in those generations. While it's certainly normal to reach into musical tastes that came before or after our prime times, we often stick to what we know and what we grew up with. This seems to be the issue that is perplexing people on social media as the highly-acclaimed artist, Billie Eilish, sat down on the Jimmy Kimmel show and was asked about her musical knowledge, despite the fact that she is only 17 years old.

Eilish Knows Who Madonna Is, But Not Van Halen

In the Kimmel interview, Eilish was asked if she knew who Madonna is? Why? Because Jimmy was 17 years old in 1984, so he felt compelled to ask which artists she was familiar with from that time. She replied that she was aware of Madonna, but that there were a lot of musicians from that era that she didn't know. This then prompted Jimmy Kimmel's question of whether Eilish knew who Van Halen was. Of course, she didn't. And why would she? Considering that they only produced one album in her lifetime at the end of their run, it doesn't seem logical for her to be familiar with them. That didn't stop people on social media coming after Eilish.

Despite the fact that she's only 17, many people on social media criticized her for not know who Van Halen was. One person wrote," My take: you should definitely know who Van Halen is even if you’re 17." While another person, even acknowledging her age, lambasted her by saying, "I know u guys think that this is ok and I get it but...cmon girl it’s VAN HALEN." Overall, there seems to be a divide in the consensus of whether or not she should be aware of the band. However, others were quick to come to her defense, even from unlikely sources.

Eilish fans and rational people alike came to her defense after being dragged up and down, through social media. One person wrote, "I say this as a superfan: Van Halen has given Billie Eilish no reason to know who they are. They've done very little during her lifetime. Don't complain about other people's musical experience being different. Instead, share -- give people a reason to love what you love." Another posted, "Who cares if a teenager doesn’t know the music you knew when you were a teen? Introduce them! Y’all didn’t come onto this earth knowing all the stuff you know now either. Doesn’t matter when they meet the good stuff. Shut up and play it for them."

Just when everyone thought this was getting out of hand, the one group came in to settle once and for all. Yeah, you guessed it. Van Halen. Wolfgang Van Halen, the current bassist, and son of the founding member, Eddie Van Halen tweeted out about the whole ordeal stating, "If you haven't heard of @billieeilish, go check her out. She's cool. If you haven't heard of @VanHalen, go check them out. They're cool too." The band member went on to say, "Music is supposed to bring us together, not divide us. Listen to what you want and don't shame others for now knowing what you like." Here's to Wolfgang for taking the high road and acknowledging the bigger picture here.
