The Unlikely Story of George W. Bush, Ellen Degeneres, and Dakota Johnson

In order to properly deduce what has occurred in this particularly odd situation, we need to backtrack to the date of October 6th, which just so happened to be a home game for the Dallas Cowboys. During this game, Ellen Degeneres was spotted sitting with the former president, George W. Bush, alongside her partner, Portia di Rossi. This in itself was strange for people as the former president was against gay marriage during his time in office and Degeneres, just so happens to be in a gay marriage.

Friends Don't Let Differences in Opinion Get between Them

As a result of the uproar that Degeneres faced, she made it clear in defending why she was attending a football game with the president who had conflicting social viewpoints on LGBTQ+, from herself. Degeneres stated on her show, "Here’s the thing: I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. We’re all different and I think that we’ve forgotten that we’re all different. For instance, I wish people wouldn’t wear fur. I don’t like it, but I’m friends with people who wear fur and I’m friends with people who are furry, as a matter of fact."

Opinions Might Not Get between Them, But Plans...

While Degeneres made it clear that differences in opinion should not affect friendships, the perhaps mature way to go about things, choosing a set of plans over another apparently can and will. Another quick little backtrack, though. Dakota Johnson, the Fifty Shades of Grey star, was on the Ellen Degeneres show a while back and had apparently invited Ellen to her 30th birthday party, which just so happened to fall on the same weekend as the 'infamous' Cowboys game. Queue an awkward next interview.

Plausible Deniability Is the Route to Go

In a follow-up interview with Johnson on the Ellen Degeneres Show, Ellen began asking Johnson about just turning thirty years old. Instantly, Dakota Johnson reared back and brought up how Ellen didn't invite her last year, so she made it a point to invite her to her 30th on her last visit to the show. Of course, Degeneres flat out denied being invited using the ol' plausible deniability tactic. Johnson wasn't having it, though. She claimed that everyone watching the show and her producer were aware of the invite, essentially insinuating that Ellen chose not to go.

Who's Your Favorite Comedian?

Suffice it to say, the rest of the interview was highly awkward and the air was immensely dense. Johnson was asked about Tig Notaro performing at the birthday party, from which Johnson replied that she was her favorite comedian. Whether or not that was an intentional jab at Degeneres, we don't know. We do know that these two are professional and at the top of their respective games, so here's to hoping that there aren't any hard feelings between the two of them.
